Chery sales have continued their sharp upward trajectory in Australia, with the popular Chery Tiggo 4 small SUV joined in the list of top-10 best-selling models by the Jaecoo J5 from sister brand Omoda Jaecoo.
The company is touting its sales performance as an automotive group, arguing it’s a top-five automaker in Australia if you combine sales of its namesake brand with the newer Omoda Jaecoo sister brand.
With 6971 sales in May across both brands – 4401 for Chery and 2570 for Omoda Jaecoo – that puts it behind only Ford (7195), BYD (8709 including Denza), the Hyundai Motor Group (13,888 across the Hyundai, Kia and Genesis brands), and Toyota (17,360 including Lexus).

The Chery Group had a total market share of 6.5 per cent in May. The Chery brand alone came in ninth with 4401 sales, beating MG (3872) and Mitsubishi (3307), and falling just behind GWM (4660).
It’s the Group’s 23rd consecutive month of sales growth in Australia.
Looking at year-to-date sales, the Chery Group is sitting in sixth position with 26,726 units, behind the aforementioned rival auto groups plus Mazda, and has a total market share of 5.4 per cent.

Chery said in November 2025 that it wants its namesake brand to be in the top five by 2027, with its upcoming ute expected to play a major part in fuelling the brand’s growth.
The company also said it wants one of its other brands to be in the top 10 within the same period.
Year-to-date, the Chery brand is sitting in ninth, with Omoda Jaecoo in 20th position.
Omoda Jaecoo would appear to be the most likely brand to reach the top 10, with its Lepas brand not due to arrive here until later in 2026, and both iCaur and Freelander due in 2027.

“Reaching a top-five position in Australia is an important milestone for our business, but more importantly it demonstrates that Australian consumers are increasingly embracing Chinese automotive brands, and reflects the trust Australian customers are placing in both the Chery and Omoda Jaecoo brands,” said Chery Group Australia CEO Lewis Lu in a press release.
“Three years ago, Chery restarted its Australian operations as a challenger brand. Today our combined portfolio is competing alongside some of the most established automotive companies in the market. This achievement reflects the strength of our products, the dedication of our dealer partners and the outstanding efforts of our team.
“While we are pleased with this result, we remain focused on the long term. Sustainable growth comes from continuously improving customer service, strengthening our dealer network and investing in future technologies. We believe the best is still ahead for us.”

Chery was only relaunched here as a factory-backed operation in 2023, with the Omoda Jaecoo brand commencing deliveries early in 2025.
On the surface, launching Omoda Jaecoo as a sister brand sitting at largely the same price points and competing in the same segments seems like a way to cannibalise sales of the Chery brand.
However, if Omoda Jaecoo vehicles were suddenly sold here as Cherys – as some of them are in China – buyers would not necessarily gravitate towards the Chery brand, with the automaker having previously argued its brands appeal to different customers.
Nevertheless, Chery’s top-five and top-10 market aspirations could face headwinds as more Chery Group brands arrive here.

In addition to iCaur, Lepas and Freelander, there’s another brand – Jetour – that’s expected to arrive Down Under in 2027, but it’s set to be treated as a separate business here with different back-office operations and distribution.
This strategy is in sharp contrast to rival GWM, which sells vehicles from all of its brands under the single GWM brand name.
MG, too, sells vehicles borrowed from fellow SAIC Motor brands Roewe and LDV/Maxus, while BYD has launched a second brand here in Denza but sells models from two different brands under this marque.
In short, none of Chery’s Chinese rivals are expanding their range of brands in our market as aggressively.
