Subaru Australia has issued a nationwide product safety recall for its first electric vehicle (EV), the Solterra mid-size electric SUV, due to a software fault that could cause its electric drive system to shut down.

This is the same problem that forced the recall of the related Lexus RZ and more than 1100 examples of the Toyota bZ4X recently.

“Due to a software issue with the high-voltage battery Electronic Control Unit, the electric drive system may shut down,” says Subaru in its recall notice.

“This could lead to a loss of motive power resulting in ‘EV System Malfunction’ warning message appearing in the instrument cluster and multiple malfunction indicator lamps illuminating.

“Note: Power steering and power assisted braking will continue to operate as normal.

“A loss of motive power whilst driving could increase the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and/or other road users.”
