Chinese automakers’ short model cycles and rapid-fire updates have led to a nickname, ‘China speed’, and the updated BYD Atto 2 is yet more proof of this phenomenon.
After entering production in 2024, the small electric SUV has already been spied in updated guise, and this is no mere tweaking of the grille and bumpers.
Spy photos published in Chinese media show the Atto 2 is largely unchanged visually apart from a charge port that’s been moved to the rear, and a slightly different lower front bumper design. Instead, the big changes will reportedly be found underneath.
The Atto 2, or Yuan Up as it’s known in China, will reportedly follow the larger Atto 3 (Yuan Plus) in moving to a single-motor rear-wheel drive configuration according to CarNewsChina.

An upgraded chassis will also see the Atto 2 reportedly move from torsion-beam rear suspension to an independent multi-link setup down back.
And instead of a 130kW front-mounted motor, it’ll reportedly be offered with either 100kW or 120kW rear-mounted motors, though CarNewsChina reports it could have slightly more power in export markets.
It reportedly won’t gain BYD’s new Flash Charging technology, instead incorporating a 400V electrical architecture and the choice of 42kWh and 52kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with first-generation Blade Battery cells, offering either 410km or 505km of CLTC range, respectively.
Australian-market Atto 2s are currently available only with a 51.3kWh LFP pack and an 82kW DC charge rate, offering 345km of range under the stricter WLTP cycle. In Europe, there’s also a larger 64.8kWh pack with 155kW DC charging and up to 430km of WLTP range.

The updated Atto 2 will reportedly measure 4335mm long, 1830mm wide and 1675mm tall on a 2620mm wheelbase. Other than a 25mm increase in length, those dimensions are unchanged.
Additionally, the Atto 2 should be one of the next BYDs to offer the option of LiDAR-assisted DiPilot 300 active safety and driver-assist technology.
The updated Atto 2 will follow the introduction of the Atto 3 Evo in Europe, an overhauled and now rear-wheel drive version of the Atto 3 for export markets such as Australia; the Yuan Plus is being replaced in China by a separate, larger model.
BYD launched its small electric SUV in Australia late in 2025, and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version is expected to arrive here during the third quarter (July to September) of 2026.
Even with just an electric powertrain, the Atto 2 is proving a strong seller. To the end of May, BYD Australia has delivered 2919 Atto 2s so far this year, which is more than rivals like the MG S5 EV (1427) and Leapmotor B10 (285).
