An upgrade to the VicRoads website has left users unable to access key functions – including digital driver licences, vehicle registration details and online payments – for several days, with the issue ongoing.
Described by VicRoads as a “major upgrade”, the website first experienced issues over the June long weekend, affecting approximately five million car, motorcycle, boat and heavy vehicle licence holders across Victoria.
Pages including ‘Renew your licence’ and ‘Pay your registration’ became unavailable, with users instead seeing a notice stating “some services are unavailable” due to a “major upgrade”.
The problems first emerged on Saturday, June 7, and remain ongoing, meaning the disruption has extended beyond the three-day King’s Birthday weekend.

Among the service interruptions, users have been unable to access their digital driver licence, with a ‘Can’t Load’ message displayed instead.
“VicRoads completed a planned system upgrade over the weekend as part of ongoing work to improve services for Victorians,” a VicRoads spokesperson told CarExpert.
“As things settle following the upgrade, some customers may notice occasional delays or limited access to certain services. We’re keeping a close eye on performance and making adjustments to ensure everything is running smoothly.”
Users have been directed to the app to access their licence and other functions currently unavailable through the website.

Vehicle registration and other payments can still be processed via BPAY if customers have the relevant details.
When asked when the disruptions would end, VicRoads did not provide a specific timeframe.
“If customers do have trouble accessing a service, we recommend trying again a little later, or using another available service channel if needed,” the spokesperson said.
“We’ll continue to share updates on the VicRoads website and social media channels.”

The VicRoads website includes links to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram, though its most recent post across all channels was published on June 5 and related to ordering a replacement licence.
There have been no posts about the outage, however, with Victorians instead using the comments sections to ask when the disruptions will be resolved.
It comes after the state’s vehicle registration rebate website crashed repeatedly on its first day of operation.
In 2022, the Victorian Government announced the privatisation of the state’s licensing, vehicle registration and Custom Plates operations, which were sold for $7.9 billion.
“VicRoads will continue to operate state-wide under the established VicRoads brand and there will be no impact to Victorians accessing these vital services,” a Department of Treasury and Finance statement said in October 2024.
