The rollout of updated Cupra Leons – and the Spanish brand’s new-generation plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system – is now complete in Australia.

The Cupra Leon Ve is available to order now, ahead of showroom arrivals and first customer deliveries starting in June.

It’s priced at $62,990 before on-road costs ($66,490 to $69,490 drive-away depending on the state), which makes it $16,000 more expensive than the base 110kW mild-hybrid S hatchback and just $2000 less than the hot 221kW VZx.

However, it’s only $1300 more expensive than the pre-facelift VZe hatchback, despite a new powertrain bringing more electric range.

It uses a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with the same 110kW/250Nm outputs as the old 1.4-litre, plus an electric motor that still produces 85kW and 330Nm.

Total system outputs drop from 180kW/400Nm to 150kW and 350Nm, respectively, with the 0-100km/h sprint now taking a claimed 7.7 seconds – a second slower than the old VZe.
