In this day and age of instant torque from all-electric cars, a 0–60 mph acceleration time of under 2.5 seconds is not surprising at all. In fact, we even have a bunch of cars that can do 60 mph in under two seconds, and some are even spacious four-door sedans like the Tesla Model S Plaid and the Lucid Air Sapphire. However, for a more realistic and ICE-focused experience, a sub-four-second 0-60 run is still considered commendable for sports cars and supercars. The new BMW M4 Competition Coupe does it in 3.8 seconds (3.4 seconds for the AWD version), the Aston Martin Vantage V8 does it in 3.4 seconds, and the luxury-oriented Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo does it in 3.3 seconds.

But all these cars do compromise on certain aspects to elevate their performance appeal, be it size or features. But what if one wants crazy acceleration and top-speed runs while not compromising on luxury and bespoke appeal? A car worthy of chauffeuring one around and dilating the pupils seamlessly. Yup, there exists a luxury, limited-run four-door BMW that does all of that and is neatly hidden behind a timeless design language. The only exciting features of its otherwise “normal” exterior design are bespoke wheels that instantly remind the keen-eyed of its “Alpina” connection.

The Alpina B8’s engine is special as it packs a hand-finished 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8. This engine shares its architecture with both the standard 8 Series and the mightier M8s. However, Alpina does its magic and rebuilds it distinctively. It gets new pistons, larger twin-scroll turbos, an upgraded intercooler, a revised intake system, and tweaked exhaust manifolds connected to a remapped exhaust system. The result is an output of 612 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. That’s five horsepower lower than the BMW M8 Gran Coupe’s power rating. But the torque rating is notably higher by 37 pound-feet of torque.

Power is sent to all four wheels (courtesy of an all-wheel-drive system) via an Alpina-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission. This gearbox has been tuned in collaboration with ZF to offer elevated shift dynamics while not having to compromise on smooth gear shifts, something that Alpina is famed for. For Sport, Comfort, and Manual, the gearbox, in tandem with the beastly V8, delivers distinct driving experiences. The 2025 BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe, despite weighing 4,831 pounds, does 0–60 mph in 3.2 seconds and hits the quarter mile in under 12 seconds. The top speed is restricted to 201 mph.

The BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe doesn’t look as intimidating as its performance numbers do. This is a beautifully designed, understated luxury car that, at a glance, doesn’t look much different from the run-of-the-mill BMW 8 Series. Kudos to Alpina for coming up with the “sleeper” exterior design. While the chassis is the same as the standard 8 Series, Alpina has delved deeper into the tuning of the B8’s suspension to help this fast luxury car deliver grin-worthy handling. The BMW Alpina B8 Gran Coupe had a limited-production run from 2022 to 2025. It is estimated that fewer than 1,000 units of this luxury car were made, with about 270 slated for the US market. This makes the Alpina B8 a very special luxury car. The last model year (2025) had a starting price of $151,000, which is not quite outrageous, since the current-gen BMW M8 Competition starts from $140,000. Given the limited-run nature of the Alpina B8, we expect prices to creep up slowly.
