The second-gen Volkswagen T-Roc has finally been confirmed for Australia, and it’s due in the first half of 2027 exclusively offering mild-hybrid petrol powertrains.
Head of product for Volkswagen Australia, Arjun Nidigallu, confirmed the news this week at the media launch of the new Tiguan and Tayron eHybrid (PHEV) models.
“At this point we’re tracking towards the first half [of 2027] is all we can say [right now] and again we’re ensuring the spec and pricing and the packaging is spot on, and that’s the reason we’re taking our time with it – also, we want to have it as a mild-hybrid model” Mr Nidigallu told CarExpert.
Mr Nidigallu said the 2027 T-Roc lineup will be exclusively mild-hybrid at launch, rather than the recently announced ‘full hybrid’ powertrain due in the T-Roc and Golf in Europe during the second half of 2026.

“I think our priority has been to get the plug-in hybrids because from a purely rational perspective, a plug-in hybrid is a hybrid that has the additional advantage of EV-only range,” Mr Nidigallu continued.
“For us, where we can get plug-in hybrid, that’s what we will get [in Australia], and where we can’t we’d be looking at full hybrid or mild-hybrid as a last resource for electrification.
“But certainly these vehicles are on our radar, and we continue to evaluate them as we speak to see if they’re the right fit for us. There’s a lot of pipeline stuff at the moment, and we have to wait and see in some cases.
“In other cases we’ve proposed specific requirements for our market to Germany and they’re looking into how they can deliver on that. So there’s a lot of back and forth communications on the models mentioned.”
In Europe, all versions of the new T-Roc feature some form of electrification. Where other VW models only offer the smaller 1.5 eTSI 48V mild-hybrid in 85kW and 110kW tunes, the second-generation T-Roc debuts the new 2.0 eTSI turbocharged mild-hybrid petrol with 150kW and 4Motion all-wheel drive.
That means Australia will likely get the 110kW 1.5 eTSI and 150kW 2.0 eTSI 4Motion versions from launch, neatly replacing the outgoing model’s 110kW 1.4 TSI and 140kW 2.0 TSI 4Motion powertrains for non-performance models.
Volkswagen has also confirmed a sequel to the T-Roc R is in the works, but it won’t hit production until 2027 at the earliest for global markets, and potentially won’t reach Australia until late in 2027 or sometime in 2028.
The high-performance version has also been confirmed to gain a mild-hybrid system to meet ever-tightening emissions regulations in markets like Europe, though outputs are expected to sit around the 245kW/420Nm mark like the existing Mk8.5 Golf R hot hatch, which shares the T-Roc’s MQB evo platform.
Volkswagen first revealed the new T-Roc in August last year, meaning it will have been close to two years between unveiling and Australian market launch.
It’s a pretty significant update to the ageing first-gen model, which despite being launched globally in 2017 (albeit only arriving in Australia in 2020) rides on the Mk7 Golf’s platform, which dates back to 2012.
Despite its advancing age, the T-Roc was firmly the German brand’s top-selling passenger vehicle in Australia in 2025, with its 5159 registrations well ahead of the second-placed Tiguan (3664, not including the Tiguan Allspace).
However, the Amarok ute’s 5392 sales in 2025 make the dual-cab commercial vehicle the brand’s overall top-seller, even if the VW brand is split into Passenger and Commercial entities both in Australia and globally.
