The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the latest member of the three-pointed star brand’s lineup to receive a special edition… or in this case, two.
Priced at $129,400 before on-road costs, the Mercedes-Benz E300 AMG Night Edition is now on sale, as is the Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid Dark Carbon Edition at $206,900 plus on-roads.
Both special editions will be offered in “limited numbers” and both large luxury sedans have a darker look than the E300 and E53 they’re based on, but go about it in different ways.

The special-edition E300 adds the Night Package and 21-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels with a high-sheen black finish, plus darkened door sills.
Despite this unique equipment, its price is actually lower than the standard E300, which is priced at $134,438 before on-road costs per Mercedes-Benz’s website.
Mercedes-Benz hasn’t detailed any other interior changes of note, with the AMG Night Edition continuing to feature the standard E300’s three-screen layout with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 14.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and 12.3-inch passenger display.
It’s mechanically unchanged from the standard E300, which means a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 190kW of power and 400Nm of torque, good for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 6.3 seconds and combined-cycle fuel consumption of 7.2L/100km.
The special-edition E53 receives the AMG Night Package and Night Package II, with 21-inch AMG black forged alloy wheels and blacked-out exterior trim including the mirror housings, badging and grille.
As the Dark Carbon name suggests, the special E53 features carbon-fibre inside – specifically, on the centre console.
It’s priced slightly higher than the standard E53, which Mercedes-Benz currently lists at $202,938 before on-roads.
Carbon-fibre trim aside, the E53’s interior is essentially unchanged, and continues to feature a Nappa leather-wrapped AMG Performance steering wheel and Nappa leather upholstery.
There are no mechanical changes, with the Dark Carbon Edition sharing the standard E53’s turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain with total system outputs of 450kW and 750Nm, all-wheel drive, and AMG Ride Control suspension.
The claimed 0-100km/h time is 3.8 seconds and fuel consumption is 1.7L/100km, with 101km of electric range on the NEDC cycle.
After a year packed with special editions last year, Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced one almost every month this year.
It announced the C300 AMG Line Plus Edition in February, the GLC200 Avantgarde and GT63 Pro Motorsport Collectors Edition in March, and the AMG C43 4Matic Edition R+ in April.
