The 1,300 cc mill on the new R 1300 GS is BMW’s most powerful boxer-twin engine yet. This engine is an evolution of the outgoing 1250, which has been bumped up in displacement and made more versatile with variable valve timing on the intake valves. This engine has a short-stroke design and a high compression ratio of 13.3:1. It produces 145 horsepower at 7,750 RPM and 110 pound-feet of torque at 6,500 RPM.
Contributing strongly to its do-it-all is a “sublime spread of torque” that makes it comfortable at low speeds, composed on the highways, and confident when pushed hard on all surfaces. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a claw-shifted six-speed manual gearbox (as standard) coupled to a Cardan shaft drive. An assist-and-slipper clutch is standard here.
