Mercedes-Benz is about to give a few of its posh SUVs a fresh take, one of which will pack a new V8. But this isn’t just any V8. This happens to be the very same unit found in the latest S 580. With more power, more torque, more efficiency, and more agility, the new GLS 580 may just set the stage for luxury performance SUVs moving forward.
A Genuine Sports Car Engine Will Take The GLS To New Heights
The engine in question is the M177 Evo, a flat-plane crankshaft unit that has already made its debut in the 2027 S 580. The new 4.0-liter twin-turbo mild-hybrid V8 will put out 530 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque in the GLS 580, up from 510 and 538, respectively, compared to the outgoing model. Other optimizations are found within the ignition system, exhaust gas aftertreatment, cylinder head intake and exhaust ports, and the intake camshaft. What this all equates to is more athletic and “alive” driving manners compared to the previous cross-plane unit, as well as improved efficiency.
The 4.0-liter V8 will feature a 48-volt integrated starter generator (ISG) mild-hybrid system, which, when paired with the twin-turbo setup, delivers efficient cruising and responsive power delivery. M-B places 0-60 MPH at 4.6 seconds, with an electronically-limited top speed of 130 MPH. All models will come equipped with 4Matic AWD, which delivers torque on demand for rough-road conditions while enhancing cornering control. Along with the E-Active Body Control system, occupants should remain leveled and locked in no matter the driving situation; you can also soften the spring and damper forces for a more cushy ride experience.
Why The Flat-Plane Crank Engine Is A Big Deal
There are a few notable reasons why the new M177 Evo V8 is a noteworthy addition to the GLS lineup. First is that it boasts a literal performance-oriented layout in the flat-plane setup, found in models from Ferrari and McLaren, as well as the Corvette Z06 and ZR1, and we know how those models get down. And second, while the overarching focus is on meeting future emissions standards, there’s no denying the fact that it will give the GLS 580 more punch, as peak torque will become available as low as 2,500 RPM all the way up to 4,500 RPM. NVH also improves thanks to the new engine’s dynamics, which ensures the cabin stays free of any unnecessary noise pollution.
Flagship Excellence Inside And Out
Being the flagship SUV, the GLS will come equipped with the highest level of luxury that Mercedes can squeeze into it. Thankfully, it’s a pretty big SUV, which leaves ample room for all the Old Money niceties one comes to expect from the S-Class heritage.
From the outside, M-B has redesigned the front bumper and grille to convey confidence and prestige, with a hint of modernity, thanks to optional illumination additions up front and improved LEDs. A few new paint schemes join the build page, as well as a few new wheel options. The 2027 GLS will also offer an AMG Line package, as well as a range of detailed customization options through the MANUFAKTUR Program, for those who really want to flex their salary.
Interior elements have been updated to keep the full package fresh, and include new upholstery color options, as well as the standard MBUX Superscreen with MB.OS — together delivering three 12.3-inch displays with the power of AI for endless entertainment, assistance, and vehicle info. In other words, you’ll be piloting a leather-clad starship with a Tri-Star emblem. The optional Rear Seat Entertainment Package turns the rear seating area into a presidential chauffeur carriage, thanks to even more screens, 11.6-inch this time, HD cameras, window blinds, enhanced massage functions, and more comfort/relaxation-oriented additions, as well as business-oriented aspects, like enhanced video conferencing via the app.
