Infiniti just released the full specs for the upcoming QX65, a coupe-like two-row crossover that builds on its iconic styling and knack for the finer things in life. From literal gold flecks mixed in the paint coats to detailed design features that call back not only to aspects of Japanese culture, but also Infiniti’s past performance models, the QX65 is shaping up to be a solid model in the current luxury SUV landscape. That said, there’s something else of note brewing behind the kimono. The QX65 hasn’t even hit dealerships yet, and there’s already word of an upgraded model in the works.
The QX65 May Be Planning To Revive Infiniti’s Performance Heritage
According to Automotive News’ inside source, Infiniti is planning a V-6 addition to the QX65’s line-up, which is set to debut with a four-cylinder VC turbo mill delivering 268 horsepower and 286 pound-feet of torque sent through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The rumored V-6 variant will feature the 3.5-liter mill found in the Pathfinder, though horsepower is said to push around 300. In the words of Tiago Castro, Nissan US sales chief, “Consumers in the US appreciate the V-6”, and we certainly agree, seeing as the age of downsizing is wholly upon us, and, along with the V-8, the V-6 is becoming rarer in the current landscape for any model that isn’t explicitly performance-related.
But that’s where the rumors get juicy: Infiniti could be planning to re-ignite its Red Sport line of performance-focused trims, with QX80 Red Sport talks already being tossed around. The QX65 is set to arrive at dealerships before the end of 2026, though the rumors place the V-6’s arrival further out in 2027. According to Auto News’ source, the V-6 model could pave the way for a full-on Red Sport return, with an even higher-output variant following it, stating “The V-6 is still king in this segment for the perception of power”. This would be fitting, seeing as Infiniti took styling cues from the performance-focused FX line when designing the QX65, though until we see it happen, it’s all speculation.
The QX65 Is Still A Dashing SUV, Regardless Of Engine Size
The 2027 Infiniti QX65 is a sleek, fastback-style crossover that’s aimed at first-time luxury buyers and empty-nesters looking to downsize from a large, three-row SUV. The QX65 offers a genuinely luxurious experience with an overarching theme of sporty, bold attitude that resonates with both young and old buyers. Even if it doesn’t sell like hot cakes, Infiniti is hoping it will drive showroom traffic for those looking to dive into the Japanese luxury brand’s portfolio, even those not looking to hop into a coupe-like crossover.
This is hoped to be achieved via the QX65’s modern, upmarket palette, which includes rich materials and intuitive tech. The Autograph trim features 21-inch machine-finished alloy wheels, satin chrome window trim, and a black-painted roof. On the inside, it includes open-pore wood-toned accents, a quilted dashboard, and semi-aniline quilted leather seats inspired by the folds of a kimono.
The Sport trims will feature more aggressive accents inside and out, including a distinct front grille, gloss-black exterior accents, and special five-spoke 20-inch wheels; the cabin will sport a graphite headliner and gloss-black carbonite trim pieces. All trims will feature a standard configurable 12.3-inch display with all the goodies like Apple and Android, as well as built-in Google Assistant. Of course, there are plenty of other luxe additions to the cabin, like enhanced sound systems, available ambient lighting, an advanced safety suite, wireless charging, and the like. Starting prices for sit at $53,990 for the base Luxe trim, $55,690 for the Sport trim, and $62,590 for the top-spec Autograph trim.
