Tesla has opened orders for the new Model Y L in Australia and New Zealand, marking the first time the larger three-row version of its popular electric SUV has been exported outside of China.
Priced from $74,900 excluding on-road costs (or NZD $83,900 across the ditch), the Model Y L will be offered in a single Premium Long Range AWD specification similar to that of the regular Model Y – but with some extras.
Orders are now open for the six-seater Model Y L, with deliveries commencing from the second quarter (April to June) of 2026.
Highlights include a bespoke, longer body with a longer wheelbase, as well as a higher roofline for a ‘comfort-focused’ seating layout – speaking of, it offers a 2+2+2 configuration.
It also debuts Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality for Tesla in Australia and New Zealand, which can supply 3.3kW of power output to external devices or equipment via an available adaptor.

Under the skin, the Model Y L Premium Long Range AWD quotes system outputs of 378kW of power and 590Nm of torque from its dual-motor electric drivetrain, good for a 0-100km/h claim of just 5.0 seconds. Flat out, it’ll hit a top speed of 201km/h.
Range is quoted at 681km according to the WLTP cycle, suggesting the extra wheelbase has contributed to a larger battery compared to the equivalent Model Y – though Tesla hasn’t confirmed specific battery details other than NMC (nickel manganese cobalt) chemistry. For reference, the Model Y Premium Long Range AWD quotes 600km on the WLTP cycle.
Tesla says the Model Y L offers the same charging rate and time as the Model Y Long Range and Performance versions, with a 10-80 per cent recharge taking around 25-30 minutes with a 250kW peak DC charge capacity. 11kW AC charging is also standard.
The Model Y L is 177mm longer overall than the regular Model Y at 4969mm, with 150mm of that coming from an extended wheelbase for enhanced passenger space in the second and third rows. Further, it’s 44mm taller than the five-seat model, with the drag coefficient rated at 0.216Cd.
The 2026 Model Y L is also the first Tesla to launch with an ANCAP safety rating, scoring a maximum five stars largely based on the five-seat Model Y – though additional assessments including documentation, whiplash and child seat installation were completed by the independent crash testing authority at CrashLabs in Sydney.
Other distinguishing features of the new Model Y L Long Range AWD include new 19-inch ‘Machina 2.0’ wheels with removable aero covers, which get a staggered tyres similar to the Model Y Performance – though it gets 255/45 front and 275/45 rear rubber.
There’s also a redesigned C-pillar, higher roofline, a rear spoiler inspired by the Model Y Performance, and an exclusive Cosmic Silver exterior paint – a $2600 option in Australia (or NZD $3000). At the rear, the ‘MODEL Y’ script also gets “two shadow lines” to indicate the extra row of seating.
Inside, the seats are an “all-new” design across the board, with heated and ventilated first- and second-row chairs all offering electric adjustment, as well as a heated third row. The second-row captain’s chairs also feature electrically powered armrests with one-touch operation, while the second and third rows are power folding.
ISOFIX and top-tether points are found across all four rear seating positions, and a new Zen Grey interior colour option is exclusive to the Model Y L.
Further, the Model Y L scores continuous variable damping on top of the Model Y’s basic carryover suspension, offering two selectable suspension modes – Balanced or Rear Comfort.
Rounding out the spec details are a quoted 2088kg kerb weight, as well as a 1588kg braked towing capacity. A genuine towing package is available as a “service item post-delivery”.
There’s also up to 2539L of cargo capacity with the rear seats folded (electrically), with a quoted 420L behind the third row of seats with them in place, and 1076L with the rearmost bench folded. Up front there’s also a 116L ‘Frunk’ under the bonnet.
As with the wider Tesla range in Australia and New Zealand, the Model Y L is covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre vehicle warranty, with five years of roadside assistance.
Additionally, the battery and driver unit are warranted for eight years or 192,000km – whichever comes first – with minimum 70 per cent retention of the battery’s capacity over that period as with the Model Y Premium Long Range.
The Model Y L is available to order now in Australia and New Zealand, with Australian test drive vehicles arriving in showrooms from today.
