BMW Australia has issued another recall for a defect that could pose a vehicle fire.
“The air conditioning (A/C) wiring harness may become damaged during routine microfilter (cabin air filter) replacement,” the company says in its recall notice.
“This may cause an internal short circuit, which could lead the sensor to overheat. This could pose a risk of smoke entering the cabin or a vehicle fire while driving.
“Cabin smoke or a vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property.
“Note: Owners/operators should NOT use the following remote functions until the repair has been completed: Climate control, departure plan, pre-cooling, pre-heating, Remote Engine Start (if available in the market).”

- A total of 1032 vehicles are affected, produced between 2022 and 2025, across the following variants: 520i, 540d xDrive, M5, 740i, i5 M60, i7 M70

BMW is contacting owners of affected vehicles and advising them to schedule an appointment with an authorised BMW dealership immediately to have the free fix carried out.

This is the third recall from BMW this year for a potential fire risk.
In February, it recalled more than 16,000 vehicles across nine of its model lines due to a starter motor solenoid switch that could cause a short circuit.
This was followed by a recall for more than 24,000 vehicles across over a dozen model lines (including a pair of Minis) for an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler that could lead to a coolant leak and in turn a vehicle fire.
