BYD’s premium Denza brand has opened orders for its B5 and B8, a pair of large plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs.

The B5, slightly smaller than a Toyota Prado and offering only five seats, is priced from $74,990 before on-road costs – $2490 more than a base Prado GX.

In top-spec Leopard trim, it costs $79,990 before on-roads; Leopard appears to be a nod to the fact the B5 and B8 are actually borrowed from BYD’s Fangchengbao brand, which roughly translates to ‘formula leopard’.

The B8, which has a slightly larger footprint than a Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series, opens at $91,000 before on-road costs. Opting for a more luxurious six-seat configuration brings the price up to $97,990 before on-road costs.

The flagship Denza therefore undercuts the LandCruiser 300 Series, which in entry-level GX trim starts at $98,340 before on-roads.

But Denza expects not only to attract buyers from mass-market brands but also those from luxury brands, and its B5 and B8 have precious little in the way of direct competition: there’s the Land Rover Defender PHEV, but it’s a much pricier offering.

Deliveries of the B5 will begin late in January 2026, with the B8 following after that.

The company says it has recorded almost 5000 expressions of interest for the B5 and B8, and the first 2000 customers will receive a free premium paint upgrade and interior trim enhancement valued at $1818.
