It’s been more than a decade since Bridgestone launched a new Potenza Adrenalin product, but now there’s a new tyre hitting the streets – and it’s got the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 directly in its sights.
The new Potenza Adrenalin RE005 has been developed by Bridgestone’s Asia Pacific team with enthusiasts in mind, and CarExpert was invited to experience it first-hand at the company’s proving ground in Thailand.
Interestingly, Australia was one of several markets that chose to skip the RE004 when it was launched elsewhere in 2020, with local representatives feeling it did not move the needle far enough compared with the RE003.
But that’s not the case with the RE005, and there was a palpable sense of pride and confidence from the Bridgestone team at the regional launch, held at company facilities a couple of hours north of Bangkok.
It’s fair to say the Michelin Pilot Sport series has been the standard among enthusiasts since the Super Sport set the benchmark in 2011, and Bridgestone’s people are clearly aware of this.
During a tour of Bridgestone’s product development centre – in which smart-looking people in white coats use specialist machines to test compounds, grip, durability, and longevity – CarExpert spied a set of Pilot Sport 5s among stacks of Bridgestone tyres, all destined for lab testing.
For context, the Potenza Adrenalin RE005 is designed as a high-performance road tyre for the driving enthusiast and the enthusiast-adjacent. For those doing the occasional track day, there’s the Potenza Sport, while the Potenza RE71 is a road-legal semi-slick for dedicated track cars.
Bridgestone is bringing more than 50 sizes to Australia, to suit everything from the Honda Integra Type R DC2 with 195/55R15s, right up to the HSV VE GTS which wears 275/30R20s on the rear axle.
So most popular sports cars, hot hatches, and performance models are covered, including the Volkswagen Golf GTI, Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, Subaru WRX, Ford Mustang, and multiple generations of the Mazda MX-5, among others.
In developing the RE005, there was a long list of attributes Bridgestone’s people were chasing – but the two key points they seemingly focused on were handling and confidence.
Handling, both in terms of grip and the way the tyre responds to driver input, and a high level of confidence in the tyre’s capability from the driver.
The test
Bridgestone set up three tests for us to evaluate the RE005: high-speed performance, low-speed maneuverability, and a wet course – the last of which included a variety of corners and speeds within a short track.
The high-speed test was conducted using three Toyota GR86s, allowing direct comparison of the RE005 against the RE003 and, curiously, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 – in that order – with long cambered bends at 100km/h, quick lane-changes at 120km/h, and an 80km/h slalom.
While the RE003s offered a good level of grip, there is a clear generational jump to the RE005 (two, in reality), with the new rubber offering a quieter ride over harsh surfaces, better response, and a consistency of grip.
When pushed, the degree of tyre slip on the RE005s was very linear, translating to an assuredness for the driver that the tyre will respond in a predictable manner, at almost any reasonable speed or load.
It’s probably worth declaring at this point that this author purchased a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 5s for his BMW M5 in late 2024, so there was already a familiarity with that tyre and its capabilities.
And yet, despite this, it took longer to become comfortable with the Pilot Sport 5s fitted to the third GR86 – even after having already completed five laps of the track in identical cars. I was as surprised as anyone.
There’s no doubt the Michelins have excellent turn-in, but after that initial bite, there seems to be a bit of a dead spot in terms of traction and response, before they build grip again. The result was more micro inputs to the steering – constantly testing where the traction level is in that narrow but critical range.
Over the same surfaces, at the same speeds, and with the same pressures, the Michelins were also noticeably louder than the new Bridgestones.
On the autocross-style course, laid out with cones, we had to complete a low-speed slalom before stitching together some tight corners, hairpins, and a couple of sweeping bends.
For this, we were provided with two Tesla Model 3s – one showcasing the RE005, while the other was fitted with Pilot Sport 5s.
There was nothing revelatory about this test, but served to confirm what I’d already experienced at higher speeds: the Michelins have a stronger initial bite, while the Bridgestones provided a strong and consistent level of traction at ever-increasing steering angles.
Only once was there a handful of understeer from the Tesla, but this had more to do with an absurd attempt at a tight corner entry by yours truly, at a speed that would have been asking a lot of an F1 car. All in the name of science, you see.
On the final test, a pair of BMW 330e sedans were fitted with a set of RE003s and RE005s.
This wasn’t a minor spritz of water on the track, mind you, but a thick sheet of water streaming across the track to replicate a torrential downpour in an area with sub-par drainage.
Whereas the RE003s would break traction pretty much where you would expect, causing the electronic stability control to kick in – at the same time as my own steering and throttle corrections, ensuring that the car and I were working against each other to fix the same problem – the RE005s had a much higher level of grip and maintained it for longer, while also regaining traction almost immediately.
All of which meant far fewer interventions by both the car and the driver, almost to the point of the tyre refinding grip on that soaked road before any significant correction had a chance to be made.
And this wasn’t behaviour that would be considered anything resembling ‘responsible driving’ on a wet public road. Dial it down to a sensible level, and the headroom of available grip from the Bridgestones is significant. But where’s the fun in that? Plus, I had given myself a mission.
After a long day of playing passenger princess, the Bridgestone minder sitting next to me in the 330e looked like he was ready for a Red Bull or two. So I took it upon myself to see if I could wake him up through the ‘joy of driving’…
He didn’t speak much English, but I could tell he was impressed with my skills based on the way he gripped the dashboard with his fingernails.
But I couldn’t take all the credit. While Bridgestone claims dry braking has been improved by eight per cent compared to the RE004, in the wet the RE005 is a 10 per cent improvement – while wear life is also better by four per cent.
Compared to the RE003, however, the RE005 offers seven per cent better dry grip, and 12 per cent better wet grip.
This isn’t just a tyre for sporty cars, as demonstrated by the deliberate use of Teslas. According to Bridgestone, the RE005 has a rolling resistance coefficient (RRC) that is 25 per cent better than the RE003, making it a sensible choice for electric cars, too.
In theory, it means that with the same amount of energy from the engine to complete a full revolution of the old tyre, the new Potenza would get another quarter of a roll. Despite a widespread belief to the contrary, rolling resistance does not directly equate to grip.
CarExpert’s take on the Bridgestone Potenza RE005
New cars have all sorts of electronic aids designed to keep you out of trouble, but tyres are the first line of defence, and it was fascinating to experience directly just how far these compounds have advanced over the past decade.
But tyres can also play a big part in how much fun you’re having on a winding road.
Bridgestone’s people said they were targeting handling and confidence for the latest generation of Potenza Adrenalins, and while our time with the RE005s was short, it’s clear they put the time in to meet that brief.
Engineers and executives from the Japanese tyre company were obviously proud and excited by the RE005, but the mere fact they were willing to offer back-to-back comparisons against the Pilot Sport 5 says a whole lot more than numbers on a page.
It takes some courage and conviction to do that, and while Continental did a similar thing at the launch of its MaxContact MC7 in 2024 – pitting it against the RE003 – Bridgestone didn’t bother to tape over the competitor’s logo on this event.
On the whole, the arrival of the RE005 is good news for enthusiasts, because it means there’s another true competitor to the Michelin. Increased competition (and availability) is good for everyone.
Without spending a day on alpine roads, we’re not quite prepared to say the Pilot Sport has been dethroned – but our limited experience with the new Potenza was very encouraging, and suggests there’s not a lot of daylight between the two. For a high-performance daily driver, the RE005 may even have the advantage.
Being able to drive ‘enthusiastically’ has a lot to do with your confidence in your car’s ability, and that’s arguably the biggest selling point for the Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin RE005. The consistency of grip, response, feedback, and wet performance, together with a quiet and comfortable tyre for commuting, makes the RE005 a very attractive option for those with a fun car in their driveway.
