For decades, the Toyota RAV4 has been the go-to compact SUV for Toyota fans, and while it was the most-sold model in the Japanese marque’s arsenal in 2025, it is no longer the fastest-growing Toyota compact SUV in sales. That prize goes to another Toyota compact SUV/crossover that only joined the U.S. market in 2022.
This Toyota compact SUV is affordable, spacious, available with both hybrid and gas engines, and affordable to run. We can see why the RAV4 is facing hot competition in 2026, so we are looking into what makes this stalwart-upsetting compact Toyota SUV such a popular buy in 2026.
The Compact Toyota SUV Quietly Beating Expectations
The 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross is the compact SUV that is taking on its larger cousin, the RAV4, at its own game. In 2025, Toyota reported that it sold just shy of 100,000 Corolla Cross models. Though this is well behind the number of RAV4 models sold in 2025, it still marks a massive year-on-year and month-on-month upturn compared to the stalwart Toyota SUV.
Why The Toyota Corolla Cross Is Surging In Popularity
The Toyota Corolla Cross was designed as a model to bridge the gap between their car lineups and the very model that it is now gaining popularity quicker than, the RAV4. Since its original release on the U.S. market in 2022, the Corolla Cross has sold more models year-on-year compared to the year before.
Based on the long-term-loved Toyota Corolla, but bigger and more versatile, the Corolla Cross brings the low prices associated with the Corolla, the rock-solid Toyota reputation, and the usability of larger vehicles, while still being small and easy enough to drive every day and around town. So, it isn’t hard to see why it is doing so well for Toyota. Plus, being a small but versatile model in an increasingly popular crossover market, and being built by one of the more famously reliable brands, hasn’t done the Corolla Cross any disfavors.
Corolla Cross Sales Trends Compared To The RAV4
It’s not just that you might see more Corolla Cross models out on the road, but Toyota’s sales figures are also very telling. In 2023, the Corolla Cross sold 71,100 models, up 25.5 percent from 56,666 in its inaugural model year. Over the same period, the RAV4 continued to grow, but at a more modest rate of 8.8 percent, selling 434,953 models. The sales growth gap again widened in 2024: the Corolla Cross jumped another 30.8 percent to 93,021 units, while RAV4 sales increased 9.3 percent to 475,193 units sold.
In 2025, the Corolla Cross again experienced high sales, rising 7.3 percent year-on-year from 2024 to 2025 to 99,798 models. By contrast, the RAV4 sales figures rose just 0.9 percent to 479,288 units. That means the Toyota Corolla Cross outpaced the Toyota RAV4 in sales percentage growth for three years straight.
Monthly sales to-date tell a similar story. According to the most recent figures released by Toyota for February 2026, compared to February 2025, RAV4 sales have dropped by 57.2 percent. In February 2025, 37,643 RAV4 models were sold, whereas sales for February 2026 were 16,098 units sold. For the Toyota Corolla Cross, there were 6,874 units sold in February 2025. However, there was an increase in sales by 43.2 percent, with total February 2026 sales coming to 9,842 units sold. By some measures, the Corolla Cross is the fastest-growing Toyota compact SUV on the market in the U.S.A.

This small crossover is missing some features, but it’s still incredibly efficient and plenty versatile.
What Makes The Toyota Corolla Cross Stand Out
First things first, the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross has a starting price of $25,035 and a top-end price of $33,430. So, in the grand scheme of new SUVs in the U.S.A., it is very affordable. Secondly, the Corolla nameplate carries a lot of weight in the market, thanks to it being a staple in the U.S.A. since 1968 in one form or another.
Thirdly, the new Toyota Corolla Cross has already been rated ‘Superior’ by the IIHS and has received one of the top awards, and past model years have been awarded ‘Top Safety Pick+’ awards. So, in a very short amount of time since the Corolla Cross has been on the market, there has been a lot of buzz and a lot of good reasons on the face of things to buy one, even up against staples like the Toyota RAV4.
Corolla Cross Trims Explained: Three ICE Trims, Three Hybrid Trims
There are a total of six trims for this year’s Toyota Corolla Cross: the Corolla Cross L, the Corolla Cross LE, the Corolla Cross XLE, the Corolla Cross Hybrid S, the Corolla Cross Hybrid SE, and the Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE. Pricing for the 2026 lineup includes:
- 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross L: $25,035
- 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross LE: $27,365
- 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross XLE: $29,960
- 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid S: $29,395
- 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid SE: $30,715
- 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE: $33,430
The Corolla Cross models wearing the Hybrid badge are equipped with a 2.0-liter DOHC inline-four paired with Toyota’s fifth-gen hybrid system, and the models without it get a naturally aspirated inline-four.
Lineup-Wide Features And Technology That Just Work
This year’s Corolla Cross may be affordably priced, but that doesn’t mean that it is lacking in tech and features. Toyota has given it most of the things you’ll need for comfortable everyday driving. There are two distinct front fascia designs: the Hybrid models get a sleek, color-matched grille for a sleek look, while the gas-powered Corolla Cross models boast a relatively rugged front. Both come equipped with sharp LED running lights, and everything inside is as Toyota-grade as you’d expect. Just what you need.
A sleek-looking front console with usable storage in the shape of cupholders and nooks takes center stage, while an available 10.5-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen makes this affordable compact SUV feel very up-to-date and almost techy for its pricepoint. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard across all trims, and two USB-C ports up front are standard fare. On higher trims, you can also add rear USB-C ports and QI wireless charging as well.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard across all 2026 Corolla Cross models and includes Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist, auto high beams, and Proactive Driving Assist. It may come as little surprise, especially with the Corolla Cross’s already stellar track record, that it has been given a ‘Top Safety Pick’ by the IIHS for the current model year. Optional extras and higher-grade fittings are also above its paygrade, with ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, a power liftgate, and a JBL audio rig all available to add.

2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Vs 2026 Toyota RAV4: The Real Differences
So why is the Toyota Corolla Cross outpacing the Toyota RAV4 in sales growth? It can’t just be because it is cheaper to buy, and because the Corolla Cross is a bit of a trailblazing new kid on the block for Toyota compact SUVs. The new Toyota RAV4 is also available with more powerful engines, and there is more space in the RAV4. So what is doing it for the Corolla Cross? The new Corolla Cross can be seen as a more usable small SUV, and that is saying something against the RAV4.

Price, Fuel Economy, And Everyday Practicality
The 2026 Toyota RAV4 has a starting price of $31,900, so it is some $6,700 more expensive than the Corolla Cross at the start, but also has a higher top-end hybrid model price of $43,300 for the RAV4 Limited. Obviously, that is the first thing you’re going to look at when you are looking for a new SUV. The 2026 RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid also has a starting price of $41,500 and a top-end price of $48,500 for the new RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid GR Sport, so much more expensive than the Cross.
Also, while the RAV4 is by no means a large SUV, it is noticeably larger than the Corolla Cross. The new Corolla Cross measures in at 176.1 inches by 71.9 inches, while the new RAV4 measures in at 180.9 inches by 74 inches in width. While that may not sound like a lot of difference in size, if you are in the market for an easily drivable SUV good for everyday use and don’t need something a bit beefier, the Corolla Cross is the more useful model.
Then there is fuel efficiency. There is no beating the RAV4 PHEV this year; Toyota says that it can achieve up to 102 combined MPGe, which is going to take something special to trump it by anyone, let alone a cheaper Toyota model like the Corolla Cross without a plug-in system. The 2026 RAV4 has also been estimated by FuelEconomy.gov to achieve up to 43 combined mpg, costing you an estimated $1,000 a year for gas and electricity. So again, exceptional.
The 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross, though, is estimated by FuelEconomy.gov to achieve a maximum of 32 combined mpg, costing you an estimated $1,350 for gas a year. And, according to FuelEconomy.gov, the hybrid Corolla Cross can also achieve up to 42 combined mpg, costing you $1,050 a year for gas. Or, in other words, $50 more a year for gas compared to the most fuel-efficient Toyota RAV4 in 2026 at a much lower starting price.
In mixed, real-world driving, roughly 70 percent country backroad driving and 30 percent highway cruising, I’ve been getting around 41.4 mpg, which is a whisker behind the estimated combined score, but still an exceptional showing.

2026 Corolla Cross Vs. 2026 RAV4 Interior Space And Cargo
There is no escaping the fact that the Corolla Cross is outsized both inside and outside by the RAV4, but again, how much space you need in a crossover SUV is relative. If you don’t need acres of space but enough for daily errands and trips away, for most, the Corolla Cross is enough, and likely the reason why a lot more drivers are heading toward the smaller option.

Maybe surprisingly, considering the size differences, the Corolla Cross actually boasts more legroom up front than the RAV4, but the RAV4 does have more space in the rear for passengers. So again, the shift toward the Corolla Cross could shine a light on what has been more appealing for drivers over the last few years: ample space at a lower price.

10 Best Luxury Compact SUVs To Keep On Your Shortlist
What are the best luxury compact SUVs? These ten are the most reliable and offer plenty of luxury features and qualities for your driving pleasure.
The Bigger Picture For Toyota’s SUV Lineup
The Toyota SUV lineup is one of the most well-rounded and all-around useful in the U.S. market, with a huge following and fanbase. In today’s SUV-loving U.S. market, it is how it stays competitive up against the likes of Honda, Ford, Hyundai, and Kia. Models like the RAV4, Grand Highlander, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, and Highlander are all staples, and we don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon.
Toyota reported that in 2025 they sold a total of 977,901 SUVs, or some 40,000 more SUVs than in 2024. In comparison, Toyota sold 646,176 car models in 2025, compared to 621,696 cars in 2024. With the Toyota Corolla Cross rapidly gaining on stalwarts like the RAV4, it looks like if sales fully catch up, the near-future at least may be in the hands of smaller, more conveniently-sized SUVs that can still haul and carry people around in.
Hybrids, EVs, And The Future Of Toyota Compact SUVs
Toyota is one of the foremost champions of hybrid technology, and again, we don’t see that going anywhere too fast. Yes, Toyota is rolling out a whole swathe of EVs, like the bZ, the more rugged bZ Woodland, and the C-HR, and we can expect to see more in years to come, but as the sales of EVs have somewhat slowed down in the U.S.A. over the last year, hybrids and smaller but versatile vehicles are likely to be mainstay for a little while.
The Toyota RAV4 is no doubt one of the leading crossover SUVs in the U.S. market (its massive sales figures prove that to some extent), and it has achieved more than most other brands’ attempts at one. However, now that the Toyota Corolla Cross’s sales are growing faster, we think that the smaller, more affordable, still reliable, and useful compact crossover will continue to do well in a market where drivers have realized that a bigger SUV doesn’t always mean a better SUV.
