It was over a decade ago that plug-in hybrid vehicles started to gain traction here in the U.S., but only in recent years have we seen a real flurry of new PHEVs enter the market from most brands, boasting better tech and better ranges. Among the luxury brands making PHEVs, Lexus is likely the first you’ll think about, but in fact, BMW also turns out a huge number of them.

BMW may not be the first brand you think of for reliability, with the German reputation for involved maintenance well and truly intact. There is no doubt that some of BMW’s PHEVs can be finicky and PHEVs in general have a mixed-bag reputation, but a certain selection of BMW’s PHEV sedans, SUVs, and coupes are exceptionally dependable. Below are the ten most reliable BMW plug-in hybrid models from the last eight years; all of them boast a high J.D. Power reliability rating.

The models in this list have been extensively researched to ensure the most accurate information possible as of the time of publishing. Models are listed in ascending order from least to most reliable.

J.D. Power Reliability Rating: 79/100

As the plug-in variant of the 2024 BMW 5 Series, the 2024 550e benefits from the luxury levels of the illustrious sedan and the potent power of an effectively new plug-in powertrain. The 2024 model was the first 550e MY, so to already be rated as 79 out of 100 for reliability is pretty good going for a new model.

Inside, it is as plush as is customary for a 5 Series, with the cabin boasting a 12.3-inch digital cluster, a 14.9-inch infotainment screen, and electronically-adjustable front seats, while under the hood, it is as potent and fun-sounding as expected. The 2024 550e comes equipped with a 3.0-liter inline-six paired with a 19.4 kWh battery pack and electric motor. Combined, this setup kicks out a whopping 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. This translates to rest-to-60 times in the 4-second ballpark, or very fast for something that weighs 4,916 pounds and is also exceptionally comfortable.

BMW

Because the 550e is only two-years-old, there is little information about its long-term reliability standing, but it has been rated 7.1 out of 10 by iSeeCars for dependability; owners on Kelley Blue Book (KBB) have given it a reliability score of 5 out of 5, and this underrated BMW plug-in sedan boasts one of the best modern BMW engines: the B58 inline-six. There is a lot to love about this PHEV.

It is worth noting, though, that owners of the 2024 550e have reported problems with the infotainment system glitching, the rearview camera failing, and finicky touch-controlled air vents. The good news for used BMW buyers is that the 2024 BMW 550e has already depreciated from its original MSRP of $73,800 to an ever-so-slightly more obtainable average used price of under $70,000.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Cost: $620 (5 Series)
  • Est. Maintenance Cost During The First 10 Years: $14,678
  • Total Recalls: 1 for a potentially malfunctioning integrated brake system.

As part of the 2021 BMW X3 lineup, the xDrive30e is the powerful plug-in version of the premium mid-sized SUV. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter TwinPower B48 inline-four paired with a permanent magnetic synchronous motor, which is integrated into the eight-speed auto transmission. Horsepower and torque are respectable at 288 horsepower and 310 pound-feet, respectively, and rest-to-60 times of around 6 seconds are more than handy for everyday driving.

Alongside the plush cabin and aggressive all-around build, the 2021 X30e is also a relatively fuel-efficient luxury SUV. Thanks to the plug-in hybrid rig, the xDrive30e can achieve a combined MPGe rating of 60 MPGe. You can drive a total of 18 miles on electric power only; you get a range of approximately 340 miles, and according to FuelEconomy.gov, it will only cost you $1,950 a year for gas and electricity.

The 2021 BMW X3 is renowned for being a dependable BMW model as it stands, and while there is more to look after with the plug-in xDrive30e, it is still a reliable companion. The B48 is one of the most reliable modern BMW engines, replacing the N20 mill, and even with the 80 kW motor attached, owners have reported high mileage and relatively hassle-free driving from it.

It is worth noting, though, that owners have also mentioned problems with high-voltage charging not topping up the battery properly and vibrations from the regenerative braking system.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Cost: $1,034 (X3)
  • Est. Maintenance Cost During The First 10 Years: $19,052 (X3)

As the more imposing and powerful cousin of the BMW X3, the BMW X5 is a full-size luxury SUV with all the bells and whistles. The 2022 BMW X5 lineup currently has average used prices ranging from $33,600 to $47,000. Before getting to the real M Models, the M50i is the gnarliest and most expensive model you can buy. In second place, with an average used price of $39,200, is the plug-in hybrid 2022 X5 xDrive45e.

This beast flaunts a 3.0-liter TwinPower B58 inline-six mated to the BMW eDrive hybrid system and a 24 kWh battery. Combined motor and engine horsepower is a commendable 394 horsepower; top speed in all-electric mode is 83 mph; the engine and electric top speed is 146 mph, and 0–60 mph times have been clocked at 5.6 seconds. For something that tips the scales at 5,672 pounds, we think that is quite impressive.

What makes the 2022 X5 xDrive45e stand out as dependable is the fact that it is built around the B58 inline-six, a very trusted BMW engine that has not only powered more than its fair share of BMW models, but also other brands’ sports cars. In short, it is a proper utility tool to have under the hood. Like all the models on the list, the addition of a plug-in system can complicate long-term maintenance, but owners of the 2022 xDrive45e have reported mostly favorable feedback on owning one, with some owners already putting over 60,000 miles on their models in just three-and-a-bit years.

It is already breaking ground as a decent, everyday-usable luxury SUV, but you should consider that some owners have reported total electrical failures that can stop the xDrive45e from starting, and problems with the HV battery, which are triggered by a faulty sensor.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Cost: $1,166
  • Est. Maintenance Cost During The First 10 Years: $19,460
  • Total Recalls: 1 for improperly programmed sunroof, which can decrease visibility.

BMW

As one of the most luxurious BMW lines on the planet, there is a lot to love about the 2024 BMW 7 Series PHEV. The 7 Series is imposing, the front end screams luxury and sporty; there are acres of room inside (front legroom is 41.2 inches and the maximum cargo capacity is 19.1 cubic feet), and the interior is kitted out with immense levels of luxury and techy thinking. As standard, the 2024 BMW 750e xDrive comes equipped with a BMW curved display, which includes a 12.3-inch display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. An optional 31-inch 8K Rear Theater screen is available, and a standard-fit 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio rig is included.

To complement the wholly illustrious interior, the 2024 750e xDrive is equipped with a beast of an engine: a 3.0-liter TwinPower B58 inline-six and a 14.4 kWh battery that shifts out 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque combined. The 750e xDrive is large in every dimension, measuring in at 212 inches by 86.3 inches and weighing in at an SUV-like 5,635 pounds. Despite this, it can hit 60 mph in as little as 4.6 seconds. This is due to the engine being very potent on its own (289 horsepower and 309 pound-feet), plus the 194-horsepower/207-pound-foot electric motor, and xDrive AWD, which shores up traction off the line. It is a big, heavy, lounge-like luxury sedan that can sprint.

The 2024 BMW 750e xDrive was the first model year in the U.S.A., so in-depth reliability information is a little thin on the ground at the moment, but again, thanks to the B58 being the source of petrol power, it is predicted to be very reliable for a luxury PHEV. There have been a few concerns already with the electric power doors and a few infotainment glitches, but because this is effectively a new car, some of this is likely covered under warranty.

The starting price for this beast was a whopping $109,000 in 2024, but thanks to luxury levels of depreciation, according to iSeeCars, you can pick one up today in the mid-to-high $70K range.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Cost: $1,061 (7 Series)
  • Est. Maintenance Cost During The First 10 Years: $15,369
  • Total Recalls: 3; one for a steering wheel spindle defect, one for a fault with the integrated brake system, and one for a fault with the steering wheel hands-on system.

BMW

The 2025 BMW X5 Hybrid lineup is considered a very reliable BMW model line as it is, and even with a plug-in hybrid system attached, last year’s X5 xDrive50e is still deemed to be dependable. With a J.D. Power reliability score of 81 out of 100 and a Kelley Blue Book (KBB) owner reliability rating of 4.3 out of 5, the people have spoken on the X5’s reliability.

Last year’s xDrive50e is also equipped with a 3.0-liter TwinPower B58 inline-six good for 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, which sends the 5,573-pound X5 to 60 mph in around 4.6 seconds. FuelEconomy.gov says that the xDrive50e can muster a combined MPGe rating of 58 and will cost you approximately $1,750 for gas and electricity. It is not the most fuel-efficient PHEV SUV, but it certainly is not the worst, and with the huge amount of power that the motor and mill kick out, we don’t think the slightly higher costs compared to some of its rivals are such a problem.

While RepairPal has only rated the whole BMW X5 line as 2 out of 5 for reliability, the one-year-old X5 xDrive50e is slightly bucking the trend for the almighty German SUV. It is a very new model, so again, the reliability information available is a little limited, but owners have reported that, so far, the 2025 BMW X5 xDrive50e has been a smooth and dependable SUV to own.

There have been a couple of reported faults, though, which include a software bug that can throw up a check engine light, a faulty emission sensor, and a finicky charging system, which could lead to battery drain. However, because of its age, these problems should be covered under warranty. Always check, though.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Cost: $883 (X5)
  • Est. Maintenance Cost During The First 10 Years: $19,516
  • Total Recalls: 2; one for a malfunctioning integrated brake system, and one for faulty seatbelt sensors.

You have the 2024 BMW 3 Series, which brings a huge amount to the table, and then you have the plug-in hybrid 2024 BMW 330e. With a starting price when it was released of just shy of $49,000, this impressive PHEV sedan has now depreciated into a semi-affordable luxury bargain, with average used prices of $31,200.

xDrive AWD is available, and the 2.0-liter turbo-four under the hood shifts out 288 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The interior is plush and usable, and according to FuelEconomy.gov, the rear-wheel drive flavor can achieve a combined MPGe rating of 73, while the xDrive flavor does slightly worse at 68 MPGe. Either way, it will cost you between $1,600 and $1,700 a year for gas and electricity. For a sporty and nippy luxury sedan, that is not bad at all.

BMW

There are currently no NHTSA safety recalls for the 2024 BMW 3 Series plug-in, and owners on KBB have rated it very highly overall and for reliability, with ratings of 4.2 out of 5 for both. RepairPal says it will cost north of $900 a year to keep on the road, but that isn’t exactly out of the ordinary for a BMW sedan, while CarEdge says that over 10 years, it will cost you just over $14,300. It may sound like a lot, but it’s certainly cheaper than some BMW PHEV models over a decade.

All around, the seventh-gen 3 Series is a relatively stable model line, and while the 2024 330e has so far garnered good reviews about its reliability (especially the B48 inline-four), it may be too early to tell about long-term dependability. You should also take note that some owners have mentioned minor infotainment glitches and some HV battery problems that affect charging rates.

The 2018 BMW 530e is the plug-in flavor of the 2018 5 Series Hybrid lineup. It comes equipped with a 2.0-liter DOHC TwinPower B48 inline-four paired with a 9.2 kWh lithium-ion battery and an 83 kW motor. The motor and engine combined output is 248 horsepower, and it will only take around 6 seconds to get to 60 mph. For a used BMW PHEV sedan with oodles of class and a low average used price of between $17,000 and $18,100, it is a lot of bang for your buck.

The 2018 5 Series PHEV is only eight years old, and while tech and cabin design have moved on a fair amount since its release, it still feels plush and comfortable thanks to a 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, heated front seats, ample legroom in the front and rear (front: 41.4 inches/rear: 36.5 inches), and leather upholstery featuring as standard.

With a J.D. Power reliability rating of 82 out of 100, the 2018 530e is one of the most reliable BMW PHEVs on the market. Owners on KBB have echoed this sentiment, with a respective reliability rating of 4.4 out of 5, and the closed-deck B48 inline-four is a renownedly reliable BMW engine. So, you look to be in good hands with this used BMW PHEV.

There are a few owner complaints, though, and you should note that some of the more common gripes about the 550e are due to rough shifting from the transmission, the integrated HVAC failing, and, maybe more critically, some owners have complained about the EME (electronic machine electronics) failing and causing the car to shut down.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Cost: $620 (5 Series)
  • Est. Maintenance Cost During The First 10 Years: $14,413 (5 Series)
  • Total Recalls: 4; one for an EV charger defect, one for a faulty crankshaft sensor, which can cause a stall; one for the rearview camera not showing an image, and one for an airbag inflator fault.

The 2022 BMW 530e is part of the same generation as the 2018 model above, but the difference is that it is part of the face-lift generation (2020–2023), or as BMW called it, the Life Cycle Impulse (LCI) version. The 2022 model comes equipped with sharper, thinner headlights, a bigger kidney grille up front, better LED taillights, and an updated iDrive 7 infotainment system to replace the version that the 2018 model utilizes.

If you opt for the 2022 model over the 2018 model, you also get a more powerful B48 engine and plug-in rig. It will obviously cost you slightly more, with current average used prices in the $30,000 region, but you do get 288 horsepower, plus improved 0–60 mph times of 5.7 seconds.

iSeeCars has also predicted that both the 2022 ICE 5 Series and the PHEV will be subject to an average of 5.8 recalls in their lifetime, so the bonus here is that you get the same reliability from the illustrious mid-sized luxury sedan, plus better combined mpg ratings (28 mpg vs. 64 MPGe). The most owner-reported problems include phantom warning lights, a failing EME caused by coolant problems, and charging issues in some models.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Cost: $968 (BMW)
  • Est. Maintenance Cost During The First 10 Years: $14,413
  • Total Recalls: 2; one for a faulty starter relay, which could cause a fire, and one for faulty transmission mechatronics, which could cause a roll-away.

Boasting a seriously sporty and aggressive stance, bold lines, a lush interior, and a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain under the hood, the 2023 BMW X5 xDrive45e is a lot of what you could ask from a luxurious German PHEV SUV. Average used prices are still relatively high, with KBB saying that it will cost you, on average, $43,500 to get your hands on one, but with an overall owner rating of 4.3 out of 5, it could well be worth the price.

The interior is still up-to-date, with a 12.3-inch iDrive 7 touchscreen taking center stage, standard-fit Sensafin upholstery included, dual-zone climate control features, and an impressive maximum cargo capacity of 72 cubic feet, providing ample space to store things. The 2023 X5 xDrive45e boasts a 3.0-liter TwinPower inline-six that kicks mated to an 83 kW motor, which, combined, kicks out 389 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. 0–60 mph times have been clocked at 5.6 seconds, and thanks to the self-leveling two-axle air suspension, it is a very smooth-riding SUV to own.

To complement the high J.D. Power reliability rating, iSeeCars has given the 2023 X5 xDrive45e a reliability rating of 7.8 out of 10 and an overall rating of 7.3 out of 10. So, both on all-around and reliability fronts, the 2023 plug-in hybrid X5 looks to deliver. Owners on KBB have also rated it highly, with a reliability score of 4.3 out of 5.

Once again, though, owners of the X5 xDrive45e have complained about numerous problems with the HVAC system, battery degradation in cold climates, sunroof leaks, and even a battery management unit failure. On the face of things, the PHEV X5 looks to be very reliable, but it is wise to make sure you properly inspect the model you are looking at.

With an average used price of $29,000, an overall KBB rating of 4.2 out of 5, an overall J.D. Power rating of 82 out of 100, and Toyota-grade reliability ratings, the 2022 BMW 330e is the most reliable plug-in hybrid BMW model on the market at the moment. The 2022 BMW 330e may not be the most powerful BMW ever made, but it kicks out enough ponies for fun, everyday driving, and a relatively fuel-efficient ride. The 330e gets a 2.0-liter TwinPower inline-four mated to an 80 kW electric motor, which combined, sends out a respectable 292 horsepower. 0–60 mph times are in the high 5-second bracket, and according to FuelEconomy.gov, you can get around 20 miles in all-electric mode, and a decent 67 combined MPGe. This is estimated to cost you approximately $1,800 for gas and electricity.

iSeeCars estimates the average lifespan of a 3 Series to be just over 120,000 miles, but of course, we have seen some BMWs far outlive what is generally expected of them. They have also given the 2022 BMW 330e a very respectable reliability score of 7.3 out of 10 to complement the high J.D. Power reliability score, and the 4.2 out of 5 it receives on KBB.

The 2022 330e is equipped with a B48 inline-four, which, as we have mentioned, is a sturdy engine. So, the gas side of things is well covered. However, the most common complaints about the plug-in 3 Series come from the electrical side of things, and are concerned with the charging system failing to charge the battery properly, premature battery degradation, which leads to lower all-electric ranges, and electrical glitches in the cabin.

  • Average Yearly Maintenance Cost: $748 (3 Series)
  • Est. Maintenance Cost During The First 10 Years: $14,345 (3 Series)
  • Total Recalls: 1 for a faulty seatbelt audio system, which may fail to sound if the seatbelt is not being used.
