Let’s talk about Yamaha first. Few other manufacturers have the kind of racing legacy that Yamaha Motor Company has. From dominating Grand Prix circuits to shaping modern MotoGP technology, Yamaha’s approach to engineering has always been rooted in performance. Racing wasn’t just a marketing tool to Yamaha; it was their testing grounds. To bridge this gap, Yamaha dove into a new category of motorcycles blending sporty performance with everyday usability and comfort.

The Yamaha Tracer 9 Does It All Effortlessly

Now, while most sport tourers tend towards the side of sport bikes with comfort-adjusted suspension, handlebars, and saddlebags, the Yamaha Tracer 9 is this weird amalgamation of a few different categories. It has this ADV-like stance to it, where you sit above the rest of the world in an upright position. Sport bike-like styling, but the fairing ends abruptly, exposing the engine, kind of like a naked bike. Then you have the comfort and ergonomics of a touring machine, giving you long-distance capabilities.

The front-end is a rather polarizing design choice. With the headlights positioned lower than on conventional bikes, the Tracer 9 gives off a maxi-scooter-like vibe. Now, while the side cases come standard with this bike, they seem a little off. They don’t flow as neatly with the bike’s lines as the other components. It’s not a dealbreaker, and each case can accommodate a full-face helmet on its own, but it is something worth noting.

The Inline Triple Produces 117 HP

At the heart of the Tracer 9 sits a 890 cc liquid-cooled inline-triple engine that also does duty on other models like the MT-09 or the XSR900. On the Tracer 9, the CP3 engine produces 117 horsepower and 68 pound-feet of torque. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the Tracer’s engine has been tuned to deliver torque through a broad spectrum of the rev range, allowing for high-gear overtakes and even lazy cruising speed if one desires it.

But it doesn’t shy away from its sporty nature either. Advancements like the forged pistons and connecting rods, and ceramic-lined bores reduce internal friction and improve heat dissipation, enhancing the engine’s durability, something every rider looks for in a long-distance touring machine. This is backed up by the ride-by-wire throttle and six-axis IMU, which allows for a total of five riding modes (three presets and two custom modes).

This Sport Bike Chassis Is Enhanced For Touring

The Tracer 9 uses Yamaha’s Delta-box frame, which is essentially a sport-bike chassis. Now this frame is known for the rigidity and feedback it offers, but the company has tuned it for use in a touring environment, and it perfectly complements the engine’s playful nature. Suspension is taken care of by a KYB with a 41 mm inverted front fork and a rear monoshock, both fully adjustable with high travel numbers for better all-around comfort. Stopping power comes from a dual 298 mm disc setup up front and a 267 mm disc at the rear.

A Lot Of Technology As Standard

A couple of years ago, Yamaha used to sell the flagship Tracer 9 GT+ here. Now, we only get the mid-variant: the Tracer 9 GT. It’s a slight bummer that the GT+ variants with semi-active suspension, Y-AMT gearbox, and radar-assisted cruise control aren’t available here. But what you’re missing is just a fraction of what you’re still getting. There is still a massive 7-inch full-color TFT display and an all-LED headlamp unit with a cornering function that is enabled via the IMU. Topping this is a Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle, Power Delivery Modes, lean-sensitive traction control and ABS, adjustable lift control system, and adjustable slide control system.

The Touring Capability Is Rather Strong

The biggest feature of the Tracer 9 is its comfort. We can see a large, plush seat with a lot of wiggle room, while the sub-frame has also been extended for a large pillion seat, should you decide to take your better half with you. Ergonomics are touring-oriented as well, with handlebars and footpegs positioned just right so you sit upright and don’t stress your back. Cruise control and a large, adjustable windscreen will also take away some fatigue from long rides. Finally, things like smartphone connectivity and all-LED cornering headlamps add a bit of convenience to your tour.
