Calling the new iteration of a popular Mercedes-Benz SUV a “midcycle update” while featuring over 3,000 new or updated components is, low-key, a flex for the German automaker. This mid-size SUV is a formidable rival to the BMW X5, the Audi Q7, the Volvo XC90, the Lexus RX, and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This popular SUV was already a very solid model with a wholesome blend of luxurious comfort, advanced technology, dashing looks, and versatile performance. With the all-new 2027 model, the overall package has only gotten more desirable with revolutionary suspension technology, AI-integrated in-car features, and a new set of more powerful engines. Here’s how the new GLE proves that it is an SUV for everyone.
Mercedes Just Gave Its Biggest SUV A Sports Car Engine
The 2027 S 580 isn’t the only flagship that got a performance engine upgrade this year.
Mercedes-Benz GLE: A Popular Choice Among Mid-Size Luxury SUVs
It Blends Luxury, Comfort, Technology, And Performance In Equal Parts
The GLE succeeded the M-Class, a highly impactful Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicle introduced in 1997. The GLE makes its mark with a versatile luxury SUV. The cabin is loaded with plush materials and a practical layout. Technology has been extensively used to make this GLE a capable SUV both on and off the road.
Furthermore, it offers a variety of engine options, from efficient mild-hybrid turbo mills to high-performance V8s. The GLE is lauded for its adaptive suspension technology, which has been further dialed up in the new model. There is no dearth of safety and assistive features, too. To summarize, the GLE can be a plush urban runabout, a comfortable mile-muncher, a fairly capable trail runner, and even tow considerable heft. It is the perfect do-it-all mid-size luxury SUV today.
The 2027 Mercedes GLE Packs Bleeding-Edge Technology
AI Is An Integral Part
The Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) takes the spotlight, transforming the GLE into an intelligent being that evolves with the driver’s needs. This is thanks to integrated Artificial Intelligence and powerful chipsets. The central processing unit is connected to a cloud service that enables OTA updates to the entire vehicle’s software, including entertainment, on-demand functions, and driver assistance features.
The MBUX user interface also evolves with AI integration. It gets a next-gen virtual assistant that fuses AI modules from Microsoft, Google, and ChatGPT for a more adaptive experience. This multi-agent setup helps the new virtual assistant engage in complex conversations. This has also helped Mercedes-Benz curate three AI avatars—the classic Mercedes Star, one that is practical and straightforward, and one that is more emotional and playful.
Engaging with the AI-driven software is immersive thanks to the standard MBUX Superscreen, which includes a front passenger display. The dashboard gets a huge uninterrupted slab of glass that houses three 12.3-inch displays. The infotainment screen gets sharper and has more modern graphics. Navigation is courtesy of a built-in Google Maps integration. The standard passenger display is purely for entertainment purposes, including video streaming from Disney+, YouTube, Sony RIDEVU, and more.
The instrument cluster can also be upgraded to an optional 3D cluster that adds depth and realism. The new GLE also gets an MBUX Augmented Reality Head-Up Display as an option. Safety features are also well-equipped with a standard suite of driver assistance features, including Distance Assist, Parking Assist, automatic reverse, and Parking Assist 360.

The 2027 GLE interior is elevated by new trim options and more comfort features, and technology plays a crucial role here, too. Elevating the luxurious experience is a range of ambient lighting styles that make the cabin more immersive with cool visual and auditory experiences courtesy of the MBUX Superscreen. Each of these high-resolution background designs offers moods ranging from calm to energetic, from cold to warm, and from technical to emotional, all achieved with a clever blend of light, color, and visuals.
Mercedes SUV Lineup Ranked By Interior Comfort
Discover what differentiates every Mercedes SUV available on the market today.
On the comfort front, the seats get new upholstery and stitching design. Sporty AMG Line sets are offered with the AMG Line package. The new color, “Beech Brown,” can be paired with Black, Macchiato Beige, or Bahia Brown to create refreshing color combinations for the interior. It’s available in MB-Tex, leather, and Nappa Leather. The GLE also gets three new trim materials—Natural Grain Black Brown Birch Wood, Natural Grain Brown Walnut Wood, and faint-textured Flowing Lines Polished Aluminum.
Elevating practicality in the cabin is a flexible interior layout that adapts easily to any lifestyle. It gets optional power-adjustable second-row seats that can also be folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio for added cargo space. The backrests can also be adjusted by 18 degrees for the perfect resting posture. Accessing the optional third row is via an electric easy-entry function that opens the passage with the touch of a button. The cargo space ranges from 22.25 cubic feet behind the rear seats to 72.6 cubic feet with the second row folded flat.
Refreshed Design Makes It More Striking
The exterior design gets a subtle upgrade with refreshed front and rear fascias. Complementing its rugged visual appeal is a new front bumper design, coupled with new headlights featuring twin-star motifs and a unique DRL. Mercedes also offers an optional new-gen Digital Light headlamps featuring micro-LEDs. This is claimed to consume up to 50 percent less energy, weigh 25 percent less, and be a lot more compact. This also brings the partial high-beam function to the GLE in the US for the first time.
A sizable Mercedes-Benz star is housed within a chrome frame that can be added with optional illumination. The taillights feature a pair of 3D star emblems framed in chrome. Other subtle visual refreshes include a Mercedes-Benz star pattern on the side air inlet grilles, a new exterior mirror design, and a large underbody guard. Mercedes also gives the new 2027 GLE two new color options—Dark Petrol and MANUFAKTUR Patagonia Red Metallic —and four new 20-inch wheel designs.
Elevated Driving Comfort With New Adaptive Suspension Tech
Balances Agility And Ride Comfort
Active suspension is one of the most enticing features on the GLE. It has gotten a lot cleverer on the 2027 model with the optional E-Active Body Control. Available on specific models, this in-house system is based on the standard Airmatic air suspension and retains the ride height regardless of payload. It allows the GLE to be raised to increase ground clearance or lowered for more high-speed stability.
The system can be further fine-tuned in specialized off-roading driving modes. All of this is possible thanks to five multicore processors and more than 20 sensors, which analyze driving scenarios 1,000 times per second and adapt the suspension accordingly. Other cool features possible with this suspension setup include Free-wheel mode, individual wheel control, and rear lowering during loading/unloading.
Updated And New Engine Options Add More Power, Refinement, And Capabilities
The most impactful engine upgrade is with the plug-in hybrid GLE model—the GLE500e. The old four-cylinder mill was replaced with a 3.0-liter inline-six coupled to an electric motor. It produces a combined 429 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor alone produces 181 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. The result is a hybrid GLE that does 0–60 in an estimated 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph.
Next up is the updated 4.0-liter V8 engine. This mill features a new flat-plane crank that replaced the old cross-plane design. Mercedes has also tweaked components such as the turbo compressor wheel and housing to improve response and elevate refinement. The result of these updates is a 20-horsepower and 15 pound-feet of torque increase over the 2025 model, to 530 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. The turbo V8 GLE is the quickest of the lot with a 0–60 time of 4.4 seconds.
The retained3.0-liter inline-sixfrom the outgoing model continues to produce 375 horsepowerbut gets a notable torque bump of 44 lb-ft, to 413lb-ft. The only engine that remains virtually unchanged is the base 2.0-liter turbocharged four that produces 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. All 2027 Mercedes GLE models are equipped with a standard AWD system that can continuously adjust torque distribution between the front and rear axles, from 0 to 100 percent, depending on driving situations. Power is sent to the wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission. A two-speed transfer case is also standard here for elevated off-road control.
The GLE 63 AMG Still Dominates The Performance SUV Game
The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 dominates the performance SUV segment with a twin-turbo V8, luxury interior, and cutting-edge technology.
All of these features help this luxurious SUV deliver a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. That’s ample for towing boats, horse trailers, and bigger equipment when equipped with the optional trailer hitch. The new GLE gets ESP trailer stabilization to help with towing tricky stuff. Furthermore, its Airmatic and E-Active Body Control suspension systems help the cause by automatically adjusting the connected trailer and regulating ride height and damping accordingly.
