The F3 sports bike can make up to 160 horsepower in the right configuration, but for this application, MV scaled back the horsepower to 110. This tune reaps significant midrange performance benefits with pretty much all of its torque available between 3,000 and 6,000 RPM. Theoretically, this will also improve overall reliability, but with so few of these bikes sold each year, it is hard to say. In this regard, no news is good news, but this 798cc version of MV’s triple has had its fair share of issues in the past.

In the high-performance models making between 140 and 148 horsepower, there have been reports of valve float. All these issues seem to have happened at wide open throttle out on track, with dire consequences. In this more mild state of tune, there haven’t been any cases of this happening, but we still wouldn’t want to spend too much time at full throttle. You never know what could transpire. This is an Italian motorcycle after all.

While the odd quirk will always be part of the ownership experience, Italian bikes are also heavy on style, and the Turismo Veloce certainly doesn’t disappoint in this department. This isn’t just one of the best-looking tourers, it is arguably one of the best-looking bikes currently on the market, irrespective of segment or class. The sporty lines carried over from the F3 are there for all to see, but the more upright riding position and additional wind protection don’t take anything away from the aesthetic.

It also gets the same dynamic chassis as the F3. The steel trellis supported by aluminum plates chassis offers an ideal balance between flex and rigidity in the right places. The semi-active suspension from Sachs adds another layer of convenience to a bike that certainly is not short on features.

The well-integrated color-matched saddlebags are standard fitment, and the usual bouquet of electronics is also present and accounted for. Lean sensitive traction control, cornering ABS, a quick-shifter, cruise control, heated grips, and a TFT dash with smartphone connectivity are all modern features customers will expect at this lofty price point. The one thing other manufacturers do not have is the Rekluse “Smart Clutch System” that essentially turns the Turismo Veloce into an automatic.

The gear lever and clutch are still there if the mood arises on a nice twisty bit of canyon road, but for the rest of the time, you can enjoy cruising along without needing to change gears. Honda has something similar on offer with the E-clutch, but that adds weight to the bike, whereas Rekluse’s version only adds 36 grams (around an ounce) to the overall weight of the bike.

With a host of great features and impeccable build quality, you do get what you pay for with the Turismo Veloce. But it certainly won’t be for everyone. It is a bike heavy on Italian “charm”, which is not always a good thing. Long-term reliability is not a given ,and its resale value is poor enough to make a grown man cry. That said, it is about as practical as a touring bike gets, and is one of the few genuine luxury motorcycles you can actually use every day.
