When you think of a premium cruiser, the mind instantly wanders to American bikemakers. After all, Japan and Europe have had some solid players in the market, but neither of these has truly shaken Harley-Davidson or Indian cruisers. In fact, both these American giants have actually made their cruisers more accessible than ever with repeated price cuts in the past couple of years. As a result, they make an even stronger case for themselves today.
What that means for you (the consumer) is that there is no shortage of premium cruisers on a budget today. The term ‘Budget’ is of course relative, as cruisers generally have higher average prices compared to other motorcycle segments. On that note, here is the cruiser motorcycle that feels premium without spending over $13,000.
The Most Practical And Balanced Harley You Can Buy Right Now
The Nightster Special is an all-round great purchase if you want a Harley to ride every day of the week – whether on a commute or an interstate ride.
The Harley-Davidson Nightster Special Is The Cruiser Motorcycle That Feels Premium Without The Price
There is one American bike that offers a really premium experience for that moolah. We’re talking about the Harley-Davidson Nightster Special that sells for $12,499 post recent price cuts. That makes it an impeccable value by modern-day cruiser standards. Yes, the Indian Scout Sixty Bobber undercuts it on paper, but to get a similar set of premiumness, you’ll need the Limited trim.
That brings the price difference between the two rivals to just $300. Then, you’ll need to pay extra to get a pillion saddle or a headlight fairing, which further brings down the difference. Even after all that, you still won’t get the same level of performance. Plus, the Nightster Special comes in more color options (four) with exclusive wheels compared to the simpler Scout (two).
As for Japanese alternatives, the Honda Rebel 1100 makes a strong case for itself here. It matches the Rebel in terms of premiumness, and you can even get the Rebel 1100 DCT SE while undercutting the Harley. However, you still won’t get a pillion saddle here, neither will you get a rumbling V-twin, nor comparable performance. Taking all that into account, we feel the Nightster Special justifies this title in the best way. If you disagree, do leave a comment below.
The Nightster Special Comes Armed With Premium Features All Over
Diving deeper, Harley-Davidson has loaded the Nightster Special with plenty of premium parts from head to toe. Up top, there’s an LED headlight nestled inside a sporty cowl. This is followed by a circular TFT instrument cluster. The display not only has smartphone connectivity and turn-by-turn navigation as standard, but it also gives you access to the rider aids. These include traction control, ABS, and drag-torque slip control.
Elsewhere, the ‘Special’ also brings a few other niceties over the base model to make your life better. The pillion saddle and footpeg kit is a prime example, along with the handlebar riser. You also get special wheels in a contrast gray finish and a side-mounted plate holder to further up the swagger. As for colors, you can have the Nightster Special in:
- Dark Billiard Gray
- Black Denim (+ $450)
- Blood Orange (+ $450)
- Olive Steel Metallic (+ $650)

The Nightster’s Underpinnings Come From Reputable Brands As Well
Coming to underpinnings, the Nightster checks all key boxes. You get dual-bending Showa USD forks and direct-mounted dual shock absorbers, attached to a bespoke steel trellis chassis instead of the usual Harley double-cradle setup. Complementing these is a set of 19/16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, each of which houses a single disc brake with Brembo-sourced calipers. The front caliper is floating, while the rear remains fixed.
Compact Dimensions Make This Accessible For The Masses
All these components make the Nightster the lightest Harley-Davidson today (462 pounds for the base and 483 pounds for the Special). At the same time, the saddle height is ultra low (27.1 inches) and the wheelbase is tight (60.8 inches). Ground clearance might be an issue, though, as it measures just 4.7 inches.
Harley-Davidson’s Revolution Max Engine Powers The Nightster Special
Finally, the Nightster Special boasts the Revolution Max 975T V-twin engine. This is a thoroughly modern mill (and not just by H-D standards), complete with variable valves, liquid cooling, and a high-performance downdraft intake. That, along with the two-into-one exhaust, helps achieve an output of 91 horsepower and 72 pound-feet. The former peaks at 7,500 RPM while the latter kicks in at 5,750 RPM. We know the RPMs are high by H-D standards, but these are actually lower than the Nightster’s arch-rival (the Scouty Sixty).
The Harley That Everyone’s Overlooking
The Pan America 1250 ST might seem like a bad idea… until you ride one. Milwaukee has tricks up its sleeve that we didn’t know about!
Fuel-Efficiency Is Impressive, Too
The modern engine also allows the Nightster to boast the rights of being the most efficient H-D right now. It is said to return 52 miles per gallon, which means a theoretical tank range of ~160 miles. Meanwhile, a six-speed transmission drives the rear wheel via a belt for easy maintenance.
