That is what is both great and bad about them; they’re hard to break, but all that engineering means a lot of weight. And in a twist of fate, that extra weight is what limits riders from taking them into the unknown, off tarmac.

That’s alright for the most part, because there aren’t too many products truly engineered for the hardcore explorer. Only a few good riders can exploit them to their potential. But they do exist, and we’re glad for it, because should we truly want to go where we’ve never gone before with a motorcycle, we’d want one of these. The Tuareg is quite a versatile adventure motorcycle. It is a middleweight, which means it isn’t too big, without being too small. It is also equipped with Aprilia’s renowned APRC electronics suite, which we usually expect to see on sport bikes and sport nakeds, but is equally effective when it comes to a motorcycle that is designed to go off tarmac. Aprilia has a lot of experience in off-road racing as well, which is why the Tuareg Rally is the 2025 adventure bike built to outlast anything the road throws at it.

The standard Tuareg 660 is priced at $12,499, while the Tuareg Rally 600 commands a $1,300 premium over it. You get a Tuareg that is much better equipped to deal with the dirty stuff, thanks to upgraded suspension, more aggressive tires, stronger wheels, a lighter exhaust system, and a different engine map.

The Tuareg Rally is powered by the same engine that powers the standard Tuareg, and in the same state of tune. The differences lie in the engine map that allows for a snappier throttle response. This is done to help the rider hoick the front wheel over obstacles, or kick the rear out for a turn. The APRC electronics suite means it has a different by-wire throttle, engine maps, engine brake, traction control, four ride modes, and cruise control.

The SC Project exhaust adds performance by being 10 pounds lighter than the stock unit while still meeting emissions requirements. A six-speed transmission with a two-way quickshifter is available, and a chain drives the rear wheel. The standard clutch is of the slip and assist kind.

A steel trellis frame underpins the Tuareg Rally. This is the only 660cc Aprilia that uses such a chassis. Surprisingly, the Tuareg Rally has the same 9.5-inch travel as the standard variant of the Tuareg. But it does ditch the progressive rate springs for single-rate springs. That means a harsher ride at lower speed, but better resistance to bottoming out.

So you can ride at speed and take jumps on the Tuareg Rally without worrying too much. It’s a similar story with the wheels and tires. They are the same size, but the wheels are made of high-strength aluminum alloy known for aerospace applications. Tubes are required for these rims, and Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tires are standard. Brembo supplies the brakes and the braided metal hoses. Again, the APRC suite offers features like rear wheel lift mitigation and cornering ABS that can be switched off at the rear wheel and has three levels of intervention.

The Tuareg Rally 660 sits higher in the suspension stroke because of the different spring rates, and therefore, it has better ground clearance and a higher seat than the standard bike. The fuel tank is reasonably large, and the curb weight is low.

There is a 5-inch bonded TFT display that might seem a little small compared to the others in the segment, but it allows access to the most customizable electronics suite in the segment. Elsewhere, the Tuareg Rally’s engine skid plate is a heavy-duty unit, the kickstand is a different one because of the different ride height, and there is a new chain guide as well.

The concept of the Tuareg Rally isn’t new. There are bikes like the KTM 890 Adventure R Rally that have followed this script for a lot longer than the Tuareg Rally. However, all of the options are premium middleweights, so their pricing is closer to $20,000 than the Tuareg Rally’s $13,000 mark.

There are a couple of capable middleweights that come to mind with a budget similar to the Aprilia. Particularly, the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE ($11,709) and Honda XL750 Transalp ($9,999). However, they aren’t really tuned for off-road work. At the other end of the spectrum is the AJP PR7, which is indestructible but sacrifices comfort for ultimate performance off-road. The only option then is the standard middleweight go-to if you want an adventure bike for going off-road: the Yamaha Tenere 700.

The Tenere 700 is more of a competitor to the regular Tuareg, but in the absence of anything better, it will have to do for this comparison. It is light, can do a surprising amount of off-road work, and has gotten more civilized this year thanks to a by-wire throttle, a taller windscreen, and an optional two-way quickshifter. The Tuareg Rally’s positioning and performance put it realistically in a field of one.
