Scout Motors is gearing up for production of its Terra pickup and Traveler SUV, with battery-electric and range-extended powertrains, as you’re reading this. At the same time, the automotive industry faces challenges with EV sentiment, a chaotic tariff landscape, and, now a war that will have a potential impact on the supply chain, and certainly on fuel prices. Despite the uncertainty, at a press event this week at the company’s Novi, Michigan “Innovation Center,” Scout President and CEO Scott Keogh expressed optimism, determination, and a singular focus on delivering American-made products to an enthusiastic customer base.

In October 2024, Scout, an independent subsidiary of Volkswagen Group, revealed the Terra and Traveler with electric powertrains, optional range-extending gasoline generator engines, modern but throwback styling, and, most importantly, two available rows of bench seats. So far, Keogh says Scout has garnered 160,000 reservations for its two models. Meanwhile, the equipment necessary to build them is currently being installed at Scout’s all-new factory in Blythewood, South Carolina.

While plans to build its products in the U.S. couldn’t come at a better time due to an “America first” administration aiming to reindustrialize America, other factors raise questions about the auspiciousness of the timing. EV sales retreated in 2025 (though not by much), but Scout believes its range-extended powertrain is a shield against that market trend. The orders bear that out, with EREV models making up about 87-percent of those reservations. Scout feels equipped to handle potential shifts in consumer sentiment, though, considering the modular range extender makes for easy shifts in manufacturing, as well as the ability to scale battery, engine, and fuel tank size according to future demand. Despite the havoc that a war with Iran could have on fuel prices, Keogh says that while change is a constant, the roughly 87 mpg afforded by the range-extended powertrain will always be a draw

Keogh believes the leanness of the operation is a strength, as well. Scout is focused solely on segments it sees as successful and profitable, leaving the rest aside. The vehicles target customers in all 50 states with a brand name that already has a legacy. It blends old and new, with throwback styling, bench seats, tactile switches and controls, modern technology and a direct-to-consumer sales model. The products are already “ahead of Chinese regulations,” Keogh pointed out, noting as an example that the Scouts wouldn’t be subject to China’s ban on flush, electric door handles. Localized production and largely domestically supplied parts and production equipment put Scout in a good position to weather the “storm” of scaling.

Scout’s factory will eventually have a production capacity of 200,000 units per year. Keogh is realistic about the fact that it “won’t happen overnight,” but he sees the initial customer interest as promising. He also conceded that it would be theoretically possible for the facility to share production with other Volkswagen brands if necessary. He admits that 160,000 reservations won’t mean a direct, one-to-one sales lift. Instead, that figure represents a community to cultivate. “What I do see is 160,000 customers who love Scout,” he told the gathered press. Essentially, that’s an opportunity to build relationships whether they buy on day one or not.

So, when can we expect the Scout Terra and Traveler to hit the streets? Keogh says that Scout will build early prototypes this year. Production is expected to begin toward the end of 2027, with the first customers taking delivery sometime in 2028. The Terra truck and Traveler SUV will feature 150 miles of EV range, with 500 miles of range overall with the range extender. With around 1,000 pound-feet of torque, they’ll be capable of a 0-60 sprint of 4.5 seconds. Entry-level models of both vehicles are expected to start under $60,000.
