Carryover Underpinnings But Comprehensively Updated

The 2026 Toyota RAV4 may look very different from the previous model, but its TNGA-K platform is actually carried over—albeit with heavy improvements. The platform receives additional structural adhesives, revised subframes, and braced suspension towers for improved chassis rigidity and refinement. Meanwhile, the body on top of the enhanced platform is comprehensively redesigned, with the front end gaining Toyota’s signature Hammerhead motif with C-shaped LED headlights. Though LED daytime running lights are standard, all but the higher trims XSE and Limited merely utilize the low beams of the main headlights for the daytime running lights.

LED taillights are also standard, along with alloy wheels in varying sizes. The base LE gets 17-inch wheels, while the SE, XLE Premium, Woodland, and Limited feature 18-inch wheels. 20-inch wheels are standard on the XSE and optional in the Limited. The Woodland features more rugged styling, with chunkier cladding, a more rugged front end, and grippier tires meant for mild off-roading use.

As you hop inside the new 2026 Toyota RAV4, you’ll witness an interior that’s comprehensively new with plenty of cutting-edge tech. It all begins with the standard 12.3-inch digital gauges and a 10.5-inch or 12.9-inch (XSE and Limited) central touchscreen, both powered by Toyota’s new Arene OS. This new operating system is a software-defined vehicle (SDV) architecture that enables new features to be added to the vehicle throughout its lifetime via over-the-air (OTA) software updates.

Apart from tech being front and center in the new RAV4, the overall interior aesthetic leans more on the rugged side. The angular shapes emphasize the interior functionality, wherein there are plenty of storage areas dotted around the cabin. The premium feel of the cabin varies per trim. Higher variants have more soft-touch materials and even the use of synthetic leather in a tan colorway. Premium features, depending on the variant, include a powered tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, a JBL sound system, and ventilated front seats, just to name a few.

If you want the best of the best, you’ll have to splurge on the range-topping Limited, which starts at $44,750. From the outside, the Limited, oddly enough, doesn’t get 20-inch wheels as standard, whereas this is standard in the XSE. Opting for the 20-inch wheels for $1,240 also requires the $600 head-up display. The premium color choices also include Ruby Flare Pearl and Wind Chill Pearl for $475.

Everything else from this point on isn’t necessarily part of the vehicle, as these are mostly accessories you can install at the dealer. These include body graphics as well as equipment for outdoor and pet use from famous third-party brands like ARB, Pelican, and Yakima. For this configuration, many accessories are overlapping (you realistically can’t select both color sets for the body graphics package), so we avoided this in our configuration. All in all, our RAV4 Limited with every possible accessory added, plus the $1,450 destination fee, costs $69,097, which means we added about $20,000 worth of accessories. Lexus-Like In Terms Of Features

Without the third-party accessories and additional paid services for the telematics systems, our RAV4 Limited costs $47,065. For the fully loaded price of the RAV4 Limited, you can get a base Lexus NX 350h in either front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), but you must remember that the two vehicles still don’t match in features. The NX still uses a 9.8-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen that still isn’t based on Toyota’s Arene OS, though the interior fit and finish is incrementally better than the RAV4’s.

Both models still utilize synthetic leather upholstery, but the RAV4 Limited already has ventilated front seats and a premium JBL sound system. Overall, the new RAV4 is a touch more modern in some ways than the NX, particularly when it comes to infotainment and software, so while it may not match the NX’s premium feel, the RAV4 actually has the better software. Also, as you’re about to find out in the drive impressions section, it also has a slightly better hybrid powertrain.

If you’re getting the range-topping Limited, which is similar to the model being driven for this review, electronic all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard equipment. The new RAV4 also uses the new, 2.5-liter fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System (THS V). Like the TNGA-K platform that the RAV4 is still using, it also receives incremental improvements from the previous hybrid system. Thanks to stronger electric motors, a more energy-dense lithium-ion battery, and a smarter power control unit, the new RAV4 is punchier and more responsive to drive. Its handling is also very straightforward.

Though not necessarily the sportiest, it is still quite capable of tackling corners at enthusiastic speeds. There’s reasonable steering responsiveness, while the suspension is balanced in offering both comfort and secure handling. The balanced suspension also makes the ride very stable and solid, ironing out the worst bumps and even reducing the unnecessary vertical oscillations over repeated undulations.

Closing The Refinement Gap With Lexus

Though the refinement improvements are likewise incremental, they result in a RAV4 whose refinement gap with a Lexus is narrower than ever. The RAV4 is a quiet cruiser, even at high speeds. This makes for a relaxing long-distance cruiser. Coupled with the secure handling, you’ll easily eat up the miles with this electrified crossover SUV. Speaking of which, the stronger electric motors enable the RAV4 to cruise in pure electric mode for a higher percentage. This results in improved quietness as well, since the gasoline engine works less in powering the vehicle.

Now, about that 2.5-liter four-cylinder, the engine is mated to a planetary gear e-CVT. Therefore, when you floor the pedal, the engine will emit a constant drone. No fake gear shifts to expect here, but because the hybrid system is so powerful, the engine droning is a lot less than in the previous models. There’s increased sound deadening in key areas, and together with the increased use of the electric motor, the new RAV4 is more refined than ever. In fact, the RAV4 has a better hybrid system than even the NX, due to the advancements made in the vehicle’s electric motor and batteries.
