The hybrid provides strong power with quick, smooth acceleration. The ride was responsive when I mashed the gas, making merges easy with plenty of power for passing at speed. The ride was balanced and composed despite the size of this SUV. The cabin was super quiet, which is easier on the driver and makes it more likely that kids napping in the back will continue to nap. Overall, it was smooth and well-mannered, which is exactly what you want in a family car.

We drove the X-Pro gas model on an off-road course and found it quite capable. It was a 45-minute drive at a ranch with a course that included water crossings, silt that clouded the air so you could hardly see, cows that found us very curious creatures, and plenty of inclines and descents. It was the kind of terrain an average family might encounter off-road. This is not a rock crawler, but its terrain modes of snow, mud, and sand, along with 9.1 inches of ground clearance, make it a capable light off-roader.
