Top-of-the-line touring motorcycles constitute a niche breed. This is layered with bespoke mechanical and chassis choices that make producing these land yachts a pricey affair. The Honda Gold Wing is a prime example of the same, with a unique six-cylinder engine, a sophisticated chassis and suspension setup, and the inclusion of an automatic gearbox and a host of assistive, safety, comfort, and convenience features, to leave no stone unturned in offering one of the most luxurious touring experiences on two wheels for over $25,000.

There are Honda Gold Wing rivals from Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycle, but none come close to replicating the jam-packed appeal of the Honda. BMW even offers the R 18 Transcontinental full dresser for $24,395, which offers more with pillion comfort and storage space, but is still lacking in terms of technology and versatile modern performance. However, another BMW touring motorcycle locks horns with the Gold Wing and offers a similar experience at a lower price. In a segment where the Gold Wing steals the spotlight, this Beamer is the underdog.

Touring Motorcycles And Their Appeal

Touring bikes offer the best of comfort, luxury, and utility for long-distance touring. The ergonomics are well sorted with plush seating, excellent wind and weather protection, and significant built-in storage space without any major add-ons. Furthermore, large fuel tanks, coupled with powerful engines (especially on top-spec touring motorcycles), allow riders to stay on the road longer. Touring motorcycles with a fuel tank capacity of over six gallons include the likes of the Harley-Davidson Road/Street Glide, and even the adventure-ready BMW R 1300 GS Adventure, among others.

The technology suite includes advanced touring technology that makes these motorcycles the premier choice for exploration and cross-country adventures. Notable ones include connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in turn-by-turn navigation, reverse assist, and remote start. Owing to their huge dimensions, touring motorcycles are generally passenger-friendly. The ones with standard top boxes even come with integrated back and hand supports to keep the pillion cozy.

Reasons Why Explorers Prefer Touring Motorcycles

  • Ample room for two
  • Practical storage solutions baked right in
  • The most comfort attainable on two wheels
  • Designed to be durable and reliable for years
  • Relaxed riding triangle and elevated wind and weather protection
  • Top-spec technology features for connectivity, entertainment, safety, and assistance.

What Makes The Honda Gold Wing So Goated

Despite Being An Expensive Affair At $25,500

While we pick one of the most expensive touring motorcycles out there, it is to be noted that these bikes carry eye-watering price tags because of being niche. Most top-spec touring machines have limited production counts every year. Due to the elevated levels of comfort, convenience, practicality, and performance, a lot of components are put together onto a touring bike. The materials used are also top-tier, including premium speakers, sophisticated heavy-duty suspension setup, and unique powertrain and chassis design choices. The steep asking price of a Honda Gold Wing is also due to these reasons. However, Honda has put together a fine machine which justifies its price tag.

It is powered by a unique large-displacement flat-six engine, one of its kind. The Gold Wing can be had with a six-speed manual or the world’s only seven-speed DCT gearbox. The latter is a smart transmission that also adjusts upshift and downshift points depending on riding style. Furthermore, paddles on the handlebars can make the DCT more engaging. The Gold Wing utilizes a twin-spar aluminum frame, akin to that seen on a sports bike, despite being a laid-back mile-muncher. It uses the engine as a stressed member to help maximize rigidity while keeping the weight as low as practically possible.

The suspension setup is sophisticated too, with the front getting a double wishbone setup that aids in better weight distribution, a shorter wheelbase and overall length, and the provision to push the engine further into the chassis. The rear gets a Pro-Link monoshock on a single-sided swingarm. Both ends get electronic damping and rear preload adjustability. Then there’s the impressive suite of modern features, including a sizable seven-inch TFT display for navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and more versatility thanks to wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Riding assist and safety features include a by-wire throttle, cornering traction control, ABS, and cruise control. These assist features are seamlessly bundled thanks to a six-axis IMU. Furthermore, the DCT-equipped models get a reverse gear and a “walk” mode that makes getting in and out of parking spots easier. The Gold Wing’s legacy, well-rounded appeal, and seamless integration of features around its one-off powertrain and chassis designs make its expensive price tag a worthy one. While there is no other motorcycle like the Honda Gold Wing, there is an underrated BMW touring bike that comes close to the Honda touring bike’s Goated appeal with a lot of similar features, including a six-cylinder engine, but at a lower price.

The BMW K 1600 B Feels Like A Gold Wing Without The Price Tag

The BMW K 1600 B is a flagship bagger that competes with the Honda Gold Wing. These two motorcycles have a few things in common. Both nameplates have a rich legacy: the BMW K Series has been around for over 40 years, and the Honda Gold Wing nameplate for around half a century.

Interestingly, BMW is the one famous for boxer engines, but didn’t opt for one on the K 1600. However, Honda took up the challenge and gave the Gold Wing a flat-six. Both are loaded baggers with premium comfort, convenience, and technology features. Despite being so close in many respects, BMW has somehow priced the more powerful K 1600 B lower than the Honda Gold Wing, making it a better VFM offering in the luxury touring motorcycle segment.

The inline-six-cylinder engine on the BMW K 1600 B is as distinctive as the Boxer-six on the Honda. Making the Beamer’s inline-six mill unique is its compact nature, being barely wider than a standard liter-class four-cylinder engine. BMW says that it is just 2.6 inches wider than the sizable mill on their K 1300 models. Aiding in a lower center of gravity is this engine’s tilt of 55 degrees. The K 1600 B’s sizable 1,649cc mill produces 160 horsepower at 6,750 RPM and 133 pound-feet of torque at 5,250 RPM.

These figures help the BMW tread the needle at 120+ MPH. Given the early surge of torque, the low-end and mid-range are meaty here as well. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a six-speed manual gearbox and a final driveshaft neatly hidden in its single-sided swingarm. It also has a reverse gear to help with tight and challenging parking spots. The K 1600 B gets a quickshifter as an option.

The K 1600 B uses a “bridge-type” cast aluminum frame, which is a fancy name for a twin-spar setup. This is similar to what the Gold Wing packs. This is not a popular choice among luxury touring bikes because the chassis design is primarily used for sports bikes and even sports tourers. The suspension setup on the K 1600 B is out-of-the-box, too. It gets a double wishbone setup (Duolever) at the front and a monoshock-induced (Paralever) setup at the rear. It gets 4.5 inches of front and 5.3 inches of rear suspension travel.

Electronic suspension adjustment, with automatic load leveling, elevates this Beamer’s adaptability. Braking duties are taken care of by dual 320mm discs coupled to four-piston fixed calipers up front and a single 320mm disc coupled to a double-piston caliper at the rear. Grip duties are courtesy of 120-section front and 190-section front and rear tires coupled to 17-inch cast aluminum wheels. Aluminum is used extensively to reduce weight.

Being a bagger, BMW fuses a bit of custom styling cues into the K 1600 B, without compromising on comfort. The rider triangle is relaxed with forward-set footpegs and an upright stance. BMW offers optional floorboards to make things cozier. An electronically adjustable windscreen enhances comfort during elevated touring. Adding to this, standard features like heated grips and a seat make the experience more luxurious and comfortable. The K 1600 B comes with standard lockable hard cases for ample touring storage.

These are also designed to blend with the silhouette of this BMW bagger seamlessly. Talking of which, the K 1600 B is defined by its streamlined bagger design. Notable design cues include its low-slung rear subframe that contributes to a sweeping and elongated profile that flows towards its dual chrome mufflers. Its design emphasizes a laid-back appeal with a populated front quarter transitioning into a relatively compact rear quarter. These design choices also help with accessibility, as the BMW K 1600 B has a low seat height of 29.5 inches.

BMW has stacked the K 1600 B with a lot of technology features to elevate the riding experience. Its 10.25-inch TFT display is massive and crisp, with a cleanly laid-out software skin. It is the window to access connectivity and integrated map-navigation features. Noteworthy convenience features include an adaptive cornering function for its LED headlamp, a four-button cluster for favorite features, and USB-C charging with dedicated storage space for gadgets like action cameras and smartphones.

Elevating riding dynamics and enhancing assist and safety are features such as three ride modes (Rain, Road, and Dynamic), Tire Pressure Monitor, Dynamic Traction Control, Engine Brake Control, and Hill Start Control, among others. Despite this healthy list of standard features, the K 1600 B also comes with a bunch of optional extras. A Comfort Package adds features like Keyless Ride, a central locking system, Shift Assist Pro, and an anti-theft alarm. There’s another optional kit called Tour Package that adds a superior audio system, LED auxiliary lights, engine protection bar, and more comfortable floor boards. Standalone optional features include ground-leveling lights, custom seat and forged wheels, forged handlebars, a center stand, and a low-tinted windscreen.
