As new motorcycle prices increase, used motorcycle prices are acting in an inversely proportional manner. Depreciation is normal, but the rate of depreciation we are seeing for these luxury motorcycles is anything but normal.

In some unique cases, these bikes are losing up to half their value within a few short years. As a frame of reference, the new Honda Rebel 500 SE represents a popular entry-level motorcycle, with an MSRP of $6,999. For that money, you can go out and buy a genuine luxury motorcycle. The only caveat is that none of these bikes comes with an “unlimited miles” warranty, and there is no hiding from the fact that the definition of “luxury” has evolved somewhat since they rolled off the production line.

2005 Honda Gold Wing GL1800

The first flat-six Gold Wing had already been in production for a few years by 2005, and any initial teething issues would have already been worked out. While the new version is a great bike, it costs three times as much as this and certainly is not three times the motorcycle. That said, two decades is a long time, and even a Gold Wing will fail if there is deferred maintenance.

The XDiavel was launched later in an effort to satisfy a demand for feet-forward ergos, but it still had the same chassis. In our opinion, a cruiser that can handle is not a bad thing at all, but the wiring was a little suspect right from the factory, so a long test ride – preferably on a canyon road – will be important.

This bike represents one of those rare moments where Honda misjudges the market. At the time, this was one of the first bikes that got the now-famous DCT transmission. It is also worth mentioning that Honda’s DCT has come a long way since this was made, and certainly is not the slick-shifting unit you find in today’s bikes.
