The BMW 5 Series returns for 2026 as part of the still-new eighth-generation 5 Series. As with previous generations, the G60 offers base-model inline-four-cylinder trims. However, the 255-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder won’t cut it against a Porsche 911 Carrera T. To find 911-beating speed in a new 5 Series, you’ll have to look to the 2026 BMW 540i xDrive and its 375-horsepower, turbocharged B58 inline-six. That’s right. Lucid says the Air Grand Touring, with its 118-kWh battery pack, is capable of covering a road trip-friendly 512 miles without stopping to recharge. Even the Grand Touring’s shorter-legged sibling, the Lucid Air Touring, could cover up to 431 miles. Numbers like that put the Grand Touring and the Touring trims well ahead of the Lucid Air’s closest segment rival, the Tesla Model S. But for those who would rather run down the battery by blasting from stop to stop, the Lucid Air Touring is deceptively brisk.
Other luxury sedans offer dedicated performance trims to sell serious speed. The 2026 Lucid Air is quick at any trim, full stop. Regardless of trim level, Lucid’s luxury sedan moves like the wind. The 2026 Lucid Air Touring, for instance, will near-silently sprint to 60 mph in just three seconds. It’s all in the Air Touring’s high-powered, grippy recipe. Rather than opting for a single-motor, 430-horsepower platform like the base Air Pure, the Touring trim rides on a 620-horsepower, dual-motor application that sends power to all four wheels. Granted, the tri-motor, 1,234-horsepower Lucid Air Sapphire will outrun the Touring trim by nearly a full second. However, stretching to the range-topping Sapphire will also require an additional $169,000, effectively tripling the starting price of the Touring trim.

The Tesla Model S has been around for over 13 years now. In that time, the Model S has done its best to take the image of the battery-electric vehicle away from the anemic, boring models of yesteryear and reframe the concept with a luxury sedan rocketship. For 2026, the Model S is available in two specs: the Model S and the Model S Plaid. That said, the Model S Plaid is hardly a sleeper compared to the base model; aggressive body treatments and carbon fiber bookend the posh electric sedan. Along with the rear-mounted Plaid badge, the Plaid’s look serves as something of a warning that you don’t want to try to outrun a 2026 Tesla Model S Plaid from a stoplight in your Ford Mustang Dark Horse or Porsche 911 Carrera.
However, the non-Plaid 2026 Tesla Model S is plenty quick without compromising elsewhere. So fast, in fact, that the 4,784-pound S-Class with the 496-horsepower, twin-turbocharged V8 under the hood will outrun a Porsche 911 Carrera T.
Mercedes-Benz says the S-Class with twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 and the marque’s 4MATIC all-wheel drive system will hit 60 mph from a standstill in 4.3 seconds, just as quick as the manual-only 911 Carrera T. However, in Car and Driver’s testing, the Mercedes-Benz S 580 4MATIC managed to smash a sprint to 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, putting the heavy, opulent sedan in rarified air.
