With the resale value currently sitting at $20,000, that equates to a mere $1k worth of depreciation over the course of 5 years. Trade value is currently sitting at $15,600, but with the oversupply problem dealers are currently dealing with, it is highly unlikely any of them will be willing to pay that much today. If you are in the market for one, that oversupply is good news, because it means there will be deals to be had if you look hard enough.

By the middle of 2020, Harley-Davidson launched the 30th anniversary edition of the Fat Boy. For the most part, it was just a styling pack, but with a limited run of only 2,500 bikes, it was priced differently. In addition to the black-on-black paint, it also got the old tank logo designed by Wilie G. Davidson, with a big 30 added just in case you were unsure of which anniversary this model was commemorating. Also, just in case you were unsure if it was indeed a limited edition model, there was a small plaque identifying the serial number of the bike. While it isn’t necessarily worth paying extra for this model, it is important to be aware of its existence, and it certainly is worth buying if you can get a good deal on it. The retail value for the anniversary edition is $21,000, which means the depreciation is pretty similar to the regular bike because it sold for $22k back when it was new.

The muscular presence of the Fat Boy has always been there, but the first engines that got through the 90s and early 00s were hopelessly underpowered. Today, the 2024 Fat Boy still makes 94 horsepower because the Milwaukee-Eight 114 has remained largely unchanged since its introduction back in 2018. It is an engine that adds some much-needed “bite” to a bike that always had the “bark.” The latest 2025 model will get the 117 engine, offering even more bite, but you will need to add another $600 on top of the asking price.

The chassis was also all-new for 2018, and this made a huge difference to the handling. Previous Fat Boys were a handful in the corners, but the latest bike is predictable, and the chassis doesn’t get upset easily thanks to its more modern suspension setup. Like any cruiser, the lean angle is limited, but if you are after something that can do that type of thing, then you are shopping in the wrong aisle.

Technically a 2020 model, but it only truly arrived in 2021. The first edition R 18 offered a premium cruiser like no other, with its huge air-cooled boxer-twin. Unfortunately, it was met with mixed reviews. It hit all the right notes with the design and offered similar power, but with a wet weight of 790 pounds, it was even heavier than the Fat Boy. Reliability is not stellar and the resale value is currently half of what it should be.

Design-wise, the 2020 iteration of the Chief will appeal to some, and others will hate the valanced fenders. Design choice aside, it offered a similarly powerful air-cooled V-twin and a host of modern features, but it also weighed more than the Harley. While these bikes were the only two premium alternatives from other brands, this kind of money can net you a seriously powerful muscle cruiser, and that is worth considering. But, if the style is what you are after, few can touch the iconic Fat Boy.
