Credit goes to their low prices and cheap living costs, which come without losing out too much on performance (an average 500cc example has about 50 ponies, and a middleweight averages around 70 ponies). Manufacturers around the world know this, and that’s why we keep seeing new entry-level sports bikes enter the scene each year (or regular updates for the heavy hitters).

Doing just that, there’s a Chinese-owned Italian giant jumping aboard the 400-500cc sports bike bandwagon in 2026. And the motorcycle in context is feisty enough to smoke a few celebrated names. It also has a lip-smacking MSRP!

To give you a lowdown, the entry-level sports bike space in the US has several players. We start with the sub-400cc examples. We’re talking about the Yamaha YZF-R3 and KTM RC 390. These displace 321cc and 373cc, respectively, while promising under 45 horsepower. Think of them as the “true” entry-level examples, which won’t scare off even the absolute new riders.

Next up is the trusty Japanese duo: Kawasaki Ninja 500 and Honda CBR500R. These are arguably the most popular kids in the segment. For good reason, too, as the former offers a no-frills experience like no one else, while the latter brings unmatched practicality and dependability in the long term. Then, there are the new kids on the block. CFMoto has its 450SS on sale, armed with the second-most powerful engine in the segment and an uber-competitive MSRP. Then, you have Aprilia with its new RS 457. It brings Italian swagger–although it’s made in India–topped with a punchy new engine, class-leading features, and mini-RS 660-like aesthetic. Case in context is the new-for-2026 Benelli Tornado 550. The bikemaker first showed the sports bike in late 2024, followed by a confirmation of its American arrival in April 2025. It’s finally here now, albeit one year later.

The pricing is competitive in typical Chinese bikemaker fashion. The MSRP is set at $6,799, which puts it squarely in contention against the Honda CBR500R, Kawasaki Ninja 500 SE, and Aprilia RS 457. Interestingly, there’s an introductory offer going on. It slashes the price by $800, bringing it down to $5,999. That makes this one of the most bang-for-buck 500-600cc sports bikes. Not just because of the price, but also because of the equipment you get as standard.

Diving into the details, the Tornado 550 stands out by featuring the largest engine in the class. This has a 554cc parallel-twin mill, with a 70.5 mm bore and 71 mm stroke for an almost square construction. This is something we’ve already seen on Honda’s 471cc platform, and it should mean a raspy punch throughout the rev band. For an added boost, Benelli has also thrown in a 270-degree crankshaft, just like we see on the RS 457 and 450SS.

All these, along with liquid cooling and an 11.5:1 compression ratio, ensure an output of 55 hp and 39 lb-ft. Both figures are the highest in class, that too, by a sizable margin. To sweeten the pot, the horsepower peaks at just 8,250 RPM while the torque is even lower at 5,500 RPM. For reference, the Ninja 500 has 51 horsepower and 32 pound-feet, peaking at 10,000 RPM and 7,500 RPM, respectively. A shoutout also goes to the claimed 58.8-MPG fuel efficiency figure.

The Sports Bike That Will Outlive Its Owner

This iconic Japanese sports bike has seen multiple generations, and continues to be popular today.

Built Around A Trellis Chassis With Adjustable Suspension

Housing the engine is a steel trellis perimeter chassis, joined by an aluminum swingarm and a bolt-on subframe. This setup suspends on Marzocchi 41 mm USD forks and a Marzocchi monoshock. Both ends have rebound and compression adjustability, while the front also has compression adjustability. These are rare inclusions in the cheap sports bike space.

Another rare touch is the tire size. The front has a 120/70 tire, and the rear wheel has a 160/60 tire (we usually see 110/150-section tires in this category). In case you’re curious, the rubber comes from Pirelli. Rounding things off is a set of dual 320 mm front disc brakes and a 260 mm rear disc brake, all with Brembo calipers.

The Curb Weight Is Quite High

This braking setup is similar to what we see on much bigger sports bikes, and it’s here because the Tornado is quite hefty. It tips the scale at 436 pounds wet, which is 15 more than the CBR500R and a whopping 60 pounds up from the Ninja 500. In fact, the weight is also higher than the Honda CBR1000RR. As for other dimensions, they measure:

  • Seat height: 31.1 inches
  • Wheelbase: 55.9 inches
  • Tank capacity: 4.35 gallons
  • Length: 82.2 inches

All The Necessary Features Come Standard

Last but not least, there’s the feature list. In typical Chinese bikemaker fashion, the basics are all here. Front and center is a five-inch TFT instrument cluster. This comes standard with smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth or WiFi. A tire pressure monitoring system is present, too. As for rider aids, a ride-by-wire system enables two ride modes and traction control. All LED lights and a USB Type-C port complete the package.

We’d also like to give a shout-out to the unique design. The fascia comprises vertically stacked projector lamps, flanked by large LED DRLs and a massive windscreen. This is topped with sporty fairings that blend into the minimalistic tail lamp. All these help the Tornado stand out in the premium entry-level segment, but we can’t call this a handsome bike without seeing it in person.
