The ongoing conflict in the Middle East has had numerous inflationary effects, most notably fuel prices, which have skyrocketed in a very short period. This has both consumers and manufacturers looking for a solution—one that will not only serve a purpose now, but continue to play a role in auto performance and efficiency down the line. This is where Magna comes in. Magna has been producing hybrid drive technology for a while now, and it has just introduced another piece of equipment to its arsenal that could be a turnkey solution to our current struggles, as well as a common issue among theEVcommunity.

Magna offers a range of products from its DHD (dedicated hybrid drive) family that include solutions for hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and, with the introduction of the DHD REX, range-extended electric vehicles, or REEVs. You may have heard of REEVs (or EREVs) in the media lately, with many manufacturers taking an interest in the viability of this technology, such as Nissan, Jeep, and RAM, among others. Range extenders are a solution to range anxiety, which remains a big problem for EV adoption and perception. That said, we haven’t seen many REEV products come to life due to a couple of reasons: lack of buyer confidence in the systems, as well as the fluctuating interest in electric cars in general.

REEVs occupy a strange middle-ground between hybrids and EVs, in that the combustion engine itself doesn’t actually power the wheels, but instead acts as a generator to charge the battery that provides power to the drive system. This allows EVs to travel farther, or extend their range, by leveraging the gas engine’s battery charging capabilities once the battery itself is depleted. While this is definitely a viable powertrain, the at-times complicated nature and perceived redundancy of having a gas engine that doesn’t move the vehicle is enough for buyers to choose either hybrid or EV, or straight-up gas-only options.

The DHD REX enters the conversation as a modular addition to the powertrain that basically enhances the range-extending capabilities of an REEV. Designed to be fully scalable to fit the needs of any production REEV, from compact commuter to AWD SUV, the REX can be integrated into the powertrain to support electric driving, power generation, and parallel hybrid functions thanks to its multi-mode design. The REX provides instant torque when you need it for improved performance, battery charging capability when you need it forextended range, and optional parallel hybrid functionality for efficient highway driving.

There are a few reasons the DHD REX raises eyebrows in 2026. Most notably, fuel prices. We’re experiencing highs that haven’t been seen since 2022, with certain parts of the U.S. inching near $6/gallon, according to AAA. This puts hybrids and EVs at the forefront of solutions for cutting down on fuel bills. Another reason is the bubbling interest in REEVs among automakers.

RAM, Jeep, Ford, Hyundai, Nissan, and even Audi have entertained the idea of REEVs for the US market. Though between delays and EV market fluctuations, it’s hard to say if we’ll ever see these ideas come to fruition, considering hybrids are a known and proven power option, and EVs, while not so popular at times, have their established place in modern mobility. The DHD REX, being a fully scalable, modular unit from one of the world’s largest suppliers, could be the missing remedy to the aforementioned manufacturers’ reluctance. Regardless, the DHD REX is a ready-to-use product that could very well change the conversation surrounding REEVs if put to use.
