The middleweight segment, in general, has seen a steady creep in displacement over the past few years. What was once defined by the 500–700cc range has now expanded to include machines pushing close to 900cc. The Yamaha Tracer 9 is a clear example of this shift, with its 890cc triple and $12,599 price tag. Larger engines bring added performance, but they also require stronger frames, more capable brakes, and increasingly sophisticated electronics to manage that output, all of which drive costs up.

This upward trend puts riders looking for practical sport-touring machines in a tricky spot. The new wave of near-900cc motorcycles delivers impressive performance, but not everyone needs that level of output. There are still smaller-capacity options that offer genuine sport-touring ability without the added complexity and cost of larger engines. The real question is whether spending less means giving up too much, or whether, in some cases, the smaller bike might actually offer advantages beyond just saving money.

Rather than offering a stripped base model and charging extra for essential features, the 2026 Tracer 9 includes nearly everything a touring rider needs as standard equipment. The result is a bike that’s genuinely ready for multi-day trips from when it rolls out of the dealership. Buyers pay for that comprehensive specification upfront, though.

What Does The Tracer 9 Have to Offer?

2025 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT Action Yamaha

The Tracer 9 is built on Yamaha’s CP3 platform (that’s also the base for the MT-09 and XSR900), with an 890cc inline-triple that makes 117 horsepower and 68 pound-feet of torque. Features include a six-axis IMU that oversees traction control, slide control, lift control, and engine brake control. Elsewhere, the 41 mm KYB USD fork and rear shock deliver 5.1 and 5.2 inches of travel, while dual 298 mm front discs handle stopping duties. Additionally, the 5.0-gallon fuel tank and estimated 48 mpg fuel economy should translate to 210-240 miles on a full tank of gas, providing genuine long-distance range.

Premium Features Cost Money

The $12,599 price reflects Yamaha’s all-inclusive approach to the US-spec Tracer 9, which is effectively the Tracer 9 GT sold in international markets. Riders get hard cases, advanced electronics, and premium suspension as standard, straight from the factory. The trade-off, however, is that you’re paying for all of it upfront, regardless of whether you actually value or fully utilize every feature.

What about riders who don’t need those levels of performance or touring accessories? And what if you could have nearly all of it for a notably lower price? Triumph’s answer comes in the form of the Tiger Sport 660. It undercuts the Tracer 9 by over $2,000, while still delivering comparable everyday performance. The savings come from a smaller engine with slightly lower output and a less extensive feature list – not from cutting corners.

What You Get For The Money

The Tiger Sport 660 receives its most significant update yet for 2026, bringing a notably improved engine along with revisions to the chassis, styling, and feature set. Priced at $10,445, it uses the familiar 660cc inline-triple – also seen in the Trident 660 and Daytona 660 – and wraps it in a more touring-focused avatar. Electronics include multiple ride modes, traction control, switchable ABS, and cruise control as standard. It’s also equipped with quality hardware, including Showa suspension and Nissin braking components – all of which we’ll take a closer look at in more detail below.

It’s More Affordable Even With Add-Ons

For the price difference, you can equip your Tiger Sport 660 with a full luggage system, heated grips, knuckle guards, frame protectors, and the touring seat, and still have money to spare. Opting for aftermarket parts like engine guards or touring screens could see greater potential savings.

That also translates to lower insurance and maintenance costs, which typically favor smaller-displacement motorcycles. Service intervals are competitive, and simpler electronics mean lower expenses in case something goes wrong. The 660cc inline-triple itself has been around for a few years now and has proven reliable across multiple models it powers, with parts availability unlikely to be an issue.

This touring bike packs a powerful three-cylinder engine with 95 horsepower, the most in its class.

Triumph addressed a major shortcoming with the Tiger Sport 660 for 2026: power output. Previously, the same engine on the Tiger Sport 660 produced 81 horsepower at 10,250 RPM and 47 pound-feet at 6,250 RPM. For 2026, it’s been brought up to the same state of tune as the Daytona 660, resulting in a noticeable bump in performance.

The engine now produces 94 horsepower at 11,250 rpm, and peak torque climbs to 50.2 pound-feet at 8,250 rpm. The upgrade came from three 44 mm throttle bodies replacing the previous 38 mm units, plus revised intake and exhaust systems. The triple throttle body arrangement improves throttle response and breathing efficiency across the rev range, but particularly at higher engine speeds. The Tiger Sport 660 features a 4.9-gallon fuel tank, but real-world range should be comparable to the Tracer 9.

Real-World Usability

As for ease of riding, there’s also the option of a lower seat, which brings the height down from 32.6 inches to a more approachable 31.9 inches. Combined with its relatively narrow profile, the bike feels more accommodating for shorter riders.

It also benefits from a weight advantage (18 pounds to be exact), which makes a noticeable difference in everyday situations. Maneuvering in parking lots, filtering through slow-moving traffic, or handling tight U-turns should all feel easier.

The Tiger Sport 660 is equipped with components that are well-suited to extended highway riding while still being capable of handling the occasional rough patch. The Showa suspension leans more toward road use, but it does offer a degree of adjustability and enough compliance to deal with broken surfaces or light trails when required, without needing constant tweaking.

The 43 mm Showa USD fork delivers 5.9 inches of travel, which is notably more than the 5.1 inches that the Tracer front end has on offer. The additional travel improves bump absorption and should allow for a little more freedom when you’re on less-than-ideal roads. The rear Showa monoshock provides matching 5.9-inch travel (again, more than the 5.2 inches on the Tracer) with remote preload adjustment, allowing riders to compensate for luggage and passenger weight without tools.

The ride-by-wire throttle control enables ride modes that adjust throttle response and traction control intervention to suit riding conditions. Rain mode softens throttle response and increases traction control sensitivity, while Sport mode sharpens throttle mapping and reduces intervention. The traction control system monitors rear wheel slip and adjusts power delivery to maintain traction, and even gets an IMU-based system enabling cornering functionality. The ABS can be turned off at the rear, and cruise control comes standard, which will make maintaining steady speeds on the highway effortless.

How The Tiger Sport 660 Compares To The Tracer

Triumph Motorcycles

On paper, the Tiger Sport 660 is far less of a compromise than it might initially seem. The Tracer 9’s larger engine does bring a clear performance advantage, and its crossplane triple has a distinctive character that’s earned a loyal following. The inclusion of luggage as standard also means there’s no need for additional spending, and Yamaha’s broader dealer network offers an added layer of reassurance for riders across the country.

The Tiger Sport 660, however, makes a strong case in its own right. It’s more affordable, lighter, and offers more suspension travel, while remaining competitive in terms of features and electronics. The money you save could easily go toward a full luggage setup and accessories – or even better riding gear, if that’s something you need. Ultimately, the Tracer 9 is an excellent motorcycle and remains a favorite among enthusiasts. But if you’re looking to get most of that experience at a lower cost, the Tiger Sport 660 is a compelling alternative.
