You wouldn’t buy an off-roading SUV called the Mazda Irvine, would you? So even with the right name, how many of these adventure-focused models on the market can actually talk the talk and walk the walk? Let’s take a closer look at 10 current SUVs and trucks whose names come from America’s wildest places, organized by ascending MSRP. Find out whether these entries live up to the hype that is implied by their names.

2026 Toyota Tacoma
Starting MSRP: $32,245
Named after Tacoma, Washington, the 2026 Toyota Tacoma is a clear example of a bona fide off-roading truck. Even in its most humble SR trim, the Toyota Tacoma can still get the job done on and off-road. Yet what makes the 2026 Toyota Tacoma truly impressive is its seven distinct off-road-specific trims, starting with the affordable TRD PreRunner and topping out with the fully-loaded $64,450 TRD Pro.
The 2026 Tacoma TRD Pro comes equipped with off-road features like 2.5-inch FOX internal bypass QS3 dampers with external reservoirs, IsoDynamic Performance front seats with dampening system, and 33-inch all-terrain tires mounted on 18-inch alloy wheels. Combine that with the 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque generated by its hybrid 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-four, and you have an off-road rig capable of taking on nearly any challenge.
2026 Chevrolet Colorado
Starting MSRP: $32,400
Chevrolet named its mid-sized truck after an entire U.S. state because Colorado is considered a land of adventure. Yet, does the 2026 Chevrolet Colorado have what it takes to back up its inspiring name? The $32,400 base model Colorado is already a capable rig, but off-road capability takes a huge step-up with the $40,500 Trail Boss. The 2026 Colorado Trail Boss comes equipped with 32-inch all-terrain tires, a two-inch factory lift, and a two-speed automatic transfer case with skid plates.
For the ultimate trail hunter, there is the top-of-the-line $50,700 Colorado ZR2 that offers 33-inch all-terrain tires, a three-inch lift with Multimatic DSSV dampers, along with front and rear locking differentials. With its standard 2.7-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, the Chevrolet Colorado is a seriously capable mid-sized truck, no matter the task.
2026 Jeep Cherokee
Starting MSRP: $35,000
Jeep is one of the brands with the most off-roading association and heritage in its history. The 2026 Jeep Cherokee is named after Cherokee, North Carolina, but is it built for extreme conditions? While certainly less extreme than the iconic Jeep Wrangler, the Jeep Cherokee still provides great off-road capability, as all Jeep models do. The top-trim $43,000 Cherokee Overland offers the most features of any Cherokee, but its emphasis is more on luxury than off-road chops.
Still, all Jeep Cherokee models come with a standard Selec-Terrain 4×4 system with a rear-axle disconnect. You don’t find any lift kits, 32-inch tires, or skid plates on the Cherokee, however. While there may not be a Jeep Cherokee Rubicon, you can be assured that Jeep’s 4×4 system is still one of the most capable on the market.
2026 Hyundai Santa Fe
Starting MSRP: $35,050
The 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe is named after New Mexico’s capital, known as the highest elevation U.S. state capital at about 7,000 feet. Yet, is Hyundai’s three-row SUV capable of tackling harsh environments with ease? The Hyundai Santa Fe is more about on-road comfort than it is a true off-roader, but AWD is available on all of its trims.
The most extreme Santa Fe you can buy is the AWD-only $42,040 XRT trim, which comes with all-terrain tires, an additional 1.3 inches of ground clearance, and an up-rated towing capacity of 4,500 pounds. The Santa Fe XRT is still better for its overall versatility than any specific all-terrain feature. Sadly, the XRT trim is not available with the Santa Fe Hybrid model, as the XRT’s 21 MPG combined is its least redeeming quality.
2027 Kia Telluride
Starting MSRP: $39,190
Our second Colorado-inspired model is the $39,190 2027 Kia Telluride. While by no means a rock crawler, the 2027 Telluride is built to handle all types of conditions and also offers AWD in nearly all of its nine trims. AWD with Terrain Mode (snow, sand, and mud) comes standard in the $47,290 X-Line EX trim, along with a 7.4-inch ground clearance and 5,000-pound towing capacity.
The most off-road capable Kia Telluride model is the top-trim $56,790 X-Pro SX Prestige, which adds some solid all-terrain features. This includes the X-Pro suspension with 9.1 inches of ground clearance, an exclusive electronic limited-slip differential, and self-leveling rear suspension. Additional benefits include the factory-installed tow hitch, X-Pro ground view monitor, and X-Pro off-road display. With this versatile functionality and seating for up to eight passengers, a well-equipped 2027 Kia Telluride is a great blend of on-road luxury and off-road capability.
2026 GMC Sierra 1500
Starting MSRP: $38,300
The 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 takes its name from the iconic Sierra Nevada mountain range, home to geographic landmarks like Yosemite National Park. Yet, is this GMC truck capable of handling the extreme mountainous conditions implied by its name? The $38,300 2026 GMC Sierra is certainly able to handle a wide variety of terrains, even in its modest trims. Yet, it is when you upgrade to the AT4 and AT4X trims that this 1500 truck reaches an entirely different level of capability.
The $67,000 Sierra 1500 AT4 comes with standard 4WD, all-terrain tires, a two-inch lift kit, Rancho monotube dampers, skid plates, and a two-speed transfer case. The Sierra 1500 AT4 is a great blend of off-road strength and everyday comfort, while the AT4X turns the off-roading chops up even more. The $79,600 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X adds Multimatic DSSV dampers and front and rear locking differentials on top of the already capable AT4 trim. For even more capability, the AEV Edition package adds unique wheels, stamped steel front and rear bumpers, and a full underbody protection kit, including five skid plates.
2026 GMC Canyon
Starting MSRP: $38,900
GMC loves naming its models after rugged American environments, and the 2026 GMC Canyon takes its title from the world-famous Grand Canyon. Yet, is this mid-sized truck built to handle these types of harsh conditions? The short answer is yes. Just like the GMC Sierra 1500, the GMC Canyon also offers 4WD-only AT4 and AT4X trims. The $45,500 Canyon AT4 comes with a two-inch lift, 18-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, an automatic locking rear differential, and underbody skid plates.
The top-level $57,300 Canyon AT4X offers even more off-road features, such as a three-inch lift, Multimatic DSSV dampers, front and rear locking differentials, and 35-inch all-terrain tires with the AEV Edition package. Those 35-inch tires alone mean a serious level of off-road capability, but the full AT4X package means that the GMC Canyon is ready for even the most technical trails you can find.
The adaptive dampers are clearly very good. Whether that’s for taming pavement ripples, Interstate potholes, or some off-road washboard we sought out on a gritty nearby hill that’s legendary for building braking bumps, the Multimatic dampers just laughed at it all.

2026 Hyundai Palisade
Starting MSRP: $39,435
Automakers have a real affinity for Colorado and California when it comes to naming their vehicles. The 2026 Hyundai Palisade is no exception, drawing inspiration from the coastal California paradise, Pacific Palisades. Just like the enigmatic California coast, the $39,435 Hyundai Palisade balances strength and refinement rather than being extreme. This Korean three-row SUV represents that idea and identifies itself as a luxury fortress, built for tackling all kinds of challenges. AWD is available on all trims, but the $49,870 XRT PRO trim is built specifically for off-road adventures.
The 2026 Palisade XRT PRO comes standard with AWD and Terrain Mode, an electronic limited-slip differential, and 18-inch XRT exclusive wheels with all-terrain tires, which provide additional ground clearance. If you want a three-row SUV that can handle the trail and keep the entire family comfortable at the same time, the Palisade XRT PRO doesn’t just get the job done—it excels.
The XRT PRO took us through terrain that was genuinely tricky. The beginning of the trail, with the wall of dirt on one side and drop-off on the other, was a nail-biter, but the camera views on the infotainment screen made it easy to see exactly where my wheels were and kept my bumpers on the car instead of stuck into a tree.

2026 Chevrolet Tahoe
Starting MSRP: $60,700
Taking its name from the geographic wonderland that is Lake Tahoe, the 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe is the best-selling full-sized SUV. We know the Chevrolet Tahoe offers class-leading cargo room and towing capacity, but how does this massive SUV handle off the beaten path?
In the $70,700 Z71 trim, the 2026 Chevrolet Tahoe offers 4WD with a two-speed transfer case, an electronic limited-slip differential, full underbody skid plates, Magnetic Ride Control, Air Ride adaptive suspension, all-terrain tires, and a bespoke high-approach angle front bumper. Safe to say a Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 can weather the storm, all while towing a trailer or a boat (or both). Sure, you won’t be doing any rock crawling with it, but you can be certain that this capable full-sized SUV can handle just about anything else.
Toyota Sequoia
Starting MSRP: $64,825
Sequoia National Park in California may be one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and it serves as the perfect name for Toyota’s largest SUV. Before adding any special off-road trims, the $64,825 2026 Toyota Sequoia offers 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque from its hybrid twin-turbo V-6 engine, which allows the Sequoia a towing capacity up to 9,500 pounds.
Yet once you upgrade to the $81,565 TRD Pro trim, the off-road strength of this full-size SUV starts to get serious. The Sequoia TRD Pro comes equipped with Fox Racing 2.5-inch internal bypass dampers with rear external reservoirs, a rear locking differential, Multi-Terrain Select driving modes, Crawl Control, and a TRD aluminum front skid plate. In addition, the Sequoia TRD Pro offers 18-inch BBS wheels with all-terrain tires, a TRD Pro front sway bar, and a TRD Pro LED light bar. No matter the weather or the road, the Toyota Sequoia is sure to get you there with outstanding performance capability that rivals any competing off-roader.
