However, a bagger is expensive not just because it is a premium product, but also because it is overengineered. Harley-Davidson made sweeping changes to its touring range this year, but the Road Glide has held steady. That steadiness alone should tell you a lot about what it is like. It has been around for decades, but in its latest iteration, it is powered by the now uber-reliable Milwaukee Eight series engine, and the tech it contains has been on it pretty much since 2018. The frame is a traditional cradle frame, so no surprises there. With its combination of steadiness, regular but not frequent updates, and the might of Harley’s touring tech behind it, the Road Glide is the most reliable American bagger you can buy today.

Both the Road Glide and Street Glide received base price revisions for 2026, and we cannot deny that it is a very attractive base price. $25,999 undercuts some of the giants of the segment and puts a brand like Harley-Davidson and a model like the Road Glide almost at the value end of the segment! However, there is a caveat here: this base price is for the poverty-spec model with gray paint and a solo seat. If you want what is in these images, you’re probably looking at spending well over $30,000.

This hasn’t changed because there was no need for change. The Milwaukee Eight 117 powers the Road Glide and most of the current touring lineup. In the Street Glide and Road Glide, it doesn’t have variable valve timing, but it does have liquid cooling for the cylinder heads. It manages some impressive numbers for a long-stroke design.

It displaces 1,913cc, has a compression ratio of 10.3:1, and puts out 105 horsepower at 4,600 RPM and 130 pound-feet at 3,250 RPM. It is then sent through a six-speed gearbox and belt drive to the wheel. Claimed fuel efficiency is 44 MPG!

The Traditional Frame Is Also A Contributor To The Reliability

The frame of the Road Glide is another reason for its reliability. Harley-Davidson hasn’t gone to any fancy new tech to solve problems that don’t exist; a steel cradle frame does the job well enough. Showa provides the suspension here. The telescopic forks have dual bending valves and have 1.9 inches of travel.

At the rear, there are dual shock absorbers, with a much better three inches of travel. Adjustments to the suspension are limited to preload adjustment for the rear, but it is remote adjustment, which is extremely useful. Twin floating brake discs at the front with four-piston fixed calipers, and a single rear disc with a floating caliper are present. Cast aluminum alloy wheels with 19/18 inches diameter front/rear, and tubeless tires round out the package.

A Large Bike Is A Comfortable Bike For Touring

The Road Glide is a large bike; there’s no question about that. It is nearly 95 inches long and just over 37 inches wide. That is actually marginally less width than the Street Glide. The seat height is marginally more, at 26.6 inches, but the wheelbase is an identical 64 inches. Also identical is the luggage capacity, at 2.42 cubic feet. It has better ground clearance, at 5.7 inches unladen. It has a six-gallon fuel tank and weighs more than the Street Glide (no doubt thanks to the frame-mounted fairing) at 838 pounds wet.

The Road Glide gets a 12.3-inch TFT touchscreen with the Skyline OS, which means all the information you need is displayed clearly in color. Bluetooth and navigation are packaged along with it. There is a full electronics suite as well, which includes a by-wire throttle and six-axis IMU. That means you get cornering functionality for the ABS, traction control, and drag-torque slip control. The brakes are linked as well, which means that the computer can actuate both brakes even if you use only one lever. Hill hold and tire pressure monitoring are also included in the base price.

What isn’t included in the base price is… everything else. You’ll need to pay extra for better paint, chrome, a pillion seat and footpegs, and any accessories that you might fancy. A realistic price for a Road Glide is beyond $30,000, once you spec it with the things you’ll need on that interstate ride.

The Road Glide exists in a segment with multiple options. At the price, there is a product that customers default to, and that is the $25,500 Honda Gold Wing. However, it isn’t an American product, so it gets disqualified here. It’s the same reason that we’re going to have to ignore the BMW R 18 B ($20,375) and BMW K 1600 B ($24,975). Of these, the R 18 B has a fork-mounted fairing.

The only other American competitors are also equipped with fork-mounted fairings. One is the Road Glide’s twin, the Street Glide. It is $1,000 cheaper, too, but needs the same options and accessories as the Road Glide. Finally, there is the Indian Chieftain ($29,749). It has been launched with the liquid-cooled PowerPlus engine, but if you want reliability, we’d prefer the old-school air-cooled Thunderstroke 116. It has a by-wire throttle, rear cylinder deactivation, and six axis IMU coupled with a lovely retro look in the ‘Limited’ version – or you could go modern with the blacked-out ‘Dark Horse’ version.

Either way, you get a torque monster that generates 126 pound-feet at a mere 2,900 RPM. In addition, the features list is extremely impressive: it includes a seven-inch TFT display with connected features like bike locator, bike health display, and connected search. It also has Apple CarPlay, configurable gauges, and offers ride statistics. Other standard features include a pillion seat and footrests (which the Harley does not have), an electrically adjustable windshield, tire pressure monitoring, remote locking luggage, keyless ignition, and a 100-watt audio system.
