Want a Lamborghini Temerario but can’t stand being the center of attention? What you need is a sleeper. A sleeper is a car that looks normal, but is way faster than it looks. The appeal of owning a sleeper is that special feeling that comes with knowing you have immense power in disguise.

So we built a list of five sleepers that provide supercar-like performance but look relatively plain from the outside. Luxury automakers do sleeper builds the best, so that is the theme here. If you love high-performance but don’t care for the performative nature of exotic cars, these five models do it all. Join us as we break each one down, ranked by horsepower.

Models are listed in ascending order based on horsepower, from the least to the most.

Oh, look, another slow, boring Volvo SUV. That’s what you might think about the Volvo XC90 Recharge at first glance. Upon further inspection, you will realize that this is far from the truth.

This sensible-looking Volvo SUV is built for people who have their priorities in order and wear cardigans and quarter-zips. Family-friendly in design, thanks to its three rows, the XC90 Recharge looks like a soccer mom’s perfect SUV — and that’s because it is. Yet, at its heart lies a 2.0-liter twin-charged inline-four paired with two electric motors on each axle. With 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque, the XC90 isn’t just hiding its abilities; it’s one of the fastest SUVs on the market in disguise.

The XC90 Recharge delivers on that promise. Its responsiveness, thanks to both forced induction and electrification, is shocking yet drama-free. No three-row SUV should be this quick and responsive. Combine that with 32 miles of all-electric range and 58 MPGe combined, and you don’t even need the full potential unless you really want it. But if you do, it’s there, ready, and willing to activate at a moment’s notice. The Volvo XC90 Recharge is both a sensible plug-in hybrid family hauler and a Swedish supercar in the same body. Totally sensible and just as irrational at the same time.

One of the most sensible RWD sedans ever made is the Lexus IS. Hand-crafted for accountants and middle management, the Lexus IS sedan is as white-collar as it gets. Just sporty enough to be fun, but only for people who don’t have fun too often.

What is totally illogical is the ultimate variant of the Lexus IS, the Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance. The IS 500 is one of the most underestimated cars on the road today because, from the outside, you really don’t know it’s a special, limited-production model. The only dead giveaway is the quad tips on the exhaust. Why does it have a quad-tipped exhaust? Well, probably for the active exhaust system that allows its 472-horsepower 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V-8 to breathe better.

Just by offering a naturally aspirated V-8 in the luxury sedan segment, the IS 500 is a unicorn. Yet, it offers so much more than just its rewarding and rare engine. The IS 500 comes standard with F Sport adaptive suspension, upgraded brakes, a limited-slip differential, and Yamaha performance dampers. A BMW M3 Sedan may still be faster overall, but everyone knows the BMW is fast. The Lexus IS 500 F Sport Performance shows a composed exterior, but underneath you’ll find the fight of a lion. 2025 was the last model year of the IS 500, and we already miss it. Just like the Lexus LC 500, the flagship coupe it shares an engine with, we believe the IS 500 will one day be a future collectible.

So you want to cosplay like a real European. What better way to do that than with a Mercedes wagon? Totally sensible, nothing special about it, as pragmatic as it gets.

That is, until you opt for the top-trim Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon, a grocery getter so fast it should come with a warning. Yet, it doesn’t come with one. If you gave the keys over to your grandparents, they would just think it’s a very nice Mercedes with terrible fuel economy. Put it in drive and keep it in comfort mode, and it will feel pleasant and civilized just like any other Mercedes. That impression wouldn’t be wrong, but they also would have no idea of its true capability.

The E63 S Wagon produces a terrifying 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. That power gets sent to all four wheels via a quick-shifting AMG nine-speed transmission. The 3.3-second zero-to-60 is criminally fast, boasting the same time as a 2016 Dodge Viper ACR and a 2018 Ferrari 812 Superfast. Those are not wagons with comfortable seating for five with two bikes mounted on the back. Want to just light up the rear tires, just like those RWD coupes we discussed above? No problem, the E63 S Wagon can handle that with its own dedicated drift mode. Why does this family wagon have a drift mode? Because it’s awesome and crazy.

The Porsche Panamera has always been considered the practical sedan alternative to the Porsche 911. Yet, what if the Porsche 911 were a five-door lifted wagon, and you gave it as much power as a Porsche GT car?

The result would be the Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo — a true one-car solution built by German excellence. From the outside, the Turbo Sport Turismo is well-proportioned and sleek. You can tell it’s expensive as heck, but it doesn’t really give off any indication of how fast it actually is. How fast is it? Way too fast for a vehicle this practical.

The Turbo variant offers 620 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque through its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, which delivers power to all four wheels via an eight-speed PDK transmission. Cars that the Turbo Sport Turismo will beat off the line? The 2025 Aston Martin Vantage and the 2026 BMW M4 Competition. Yet, it’s not just about straight line speed. Despite its increased chassis length, the Turbo Sport Turismo dances around corners with superb fluidity. The adjustable air suspension means you can go from pure luxury comfort to attacking apexes in a matter of moments. Compared to the AMG Wagon, a close rival, the Porsche edges it out on driver engagement. The Turbo Sport Turismo is a more precise instrument, one that springs up and reacts freely with every input. The Turbo Sport Turismo is a fast car wearing a dapper suit as opposed to a sensible car with a massive speed injection.

Cadillac? Isn’t that for old people? Well, believe it or not, the average age of a Cadillac buyer has decreased to 54 from 60 in the last decade or so. So, if you are trying to blend into the shadows, the common misconception about Cadillac buyers is actually working in your favor.

That brings us to the ultimate sleeper on our list: the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. From the outside, yes, it does look nice and expensive. Sleek even. But lightning fast? That’s not the impression we get. It’s a four-door American sedan with a restrained appearance, with a fraction of the luxury performance legacy of something like a BMW M5. We are here to tell you that this Cadillac sedan will put any BMW M5 or European equivalent to shame.

How will it manage to achieve that? Its supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine that produces 668 horsepower and 659 pound-feet of torque without a single modification. The CT5-V Blackwing is also one of the last cars in its segment to offer a six-speed manual transmission, something BMW dropped a decade ago from the 5 Series lineup. The CT5-V Blackwing isn’t just rare in our current market; it’s darn near extinct. Though slower off the line than some of the other entries on our list at a 3.7-second zero-to-60 MPH time, its top speed of 200 MPH is not a joke. If you have sufficient runway, it will get you there.

The chassis is also just as special: magnetic ride control, strong aerodynamic performance with minimal exterior airfoils, and a mechanical limited-slip differential. It may not look that fast, but it’s built to go fast. Sadly, the CT5-V Blackwing may be the last of its kind of sleeper super sedan. Production began in 2022 and will end after the 2026 model year. If you desire an understated V-8 manual performance sedan, you may very well be looking at the last one we ever get.
