MG Australia has committed to offering an updated version of the existing MG 4 Electric (or MG 4 EV in some markets) alongside the all-new MG 4 EV Urban, with an updated model to be detailed “very soon” according to brand officials.
Meng Chen, head of product for MG Motor Australia, told media during the launch of the 2026 MG 4 EV Urban that the brand would continue with the rear-wheel drive MG 4 Electric alongside the new MG 4 EV Urban.
“[We will be using a] dual car strategy [for] the MG 4, and we are having – very soon – another launch for the ‘old’ MG 4. We are going to have a facelift for that vehicle,” Mr Chen said.

Beyond confirmation of the updated model’s imminent arrival, MG’s product boss indicated we can expect an updated interior with more physical switchgear in line with the MG 4 EV Urban and MG S5 EV, as well as a restructured model lineup to ensure it doesn’t cross over too much with the new Urban price leader.
The 2026 MG 4 EV is already on sale in the UK alongside the Urban, with the RWD electric hatchback starting £3000 (A$5700) higher than the most expensive MG 4 EV Urban.
It’s available there in three trim levels with 64kWh and 77kWh battery packs depending on variant; the pre-facelift’s entry-level 51kWh battery is not available in the UK.
As pictured above, it gets a revised interior with more physical controls and a conventional centre console, as well as a driver instrument cluster housed within a more conventional binnacle compared to the outgoing version’s free-standing unit.
Beyond that though, the batteries and electric motors appear to be pretty similar to before.

The ‘Premium Long Range’ gets a 140kW/350Nm permanent synchronous electric motor on the rear axle, hooked up to a 64kWh LFP battery with 61.7kWh usable capacity.
Zero to 100km/h is pegged at 7.5 seconds, with WLTP range rated at 452km combined, or up to 618km on the city cycle.
The MG 4 EV ‘Premium Extended Range’ in the UK swaps out the base LFP battery for a larger 77kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) unit, with a 74.4kWh usable capacity.
It also scores a more powerful 180kW/350Nm e-motor on the rear axle, for an almost hot hatch-like 6.2-second dash from 0-100km/h and a combined WLTP driving range of 545km – or up to 817km on the city cycle.

Finally, the high-performance MG 4 EV XPower tops the British range, boasting a 320kW/600Nm dual-motor electric drivetrain mated with a 64kWh NMC battery.
The quoted 0-100km/h time remains at a brisk 3.8 seconds, while combined range is 405km on the WLTP test cycle – or up to 548km on the city cycle.
DC charge rates range from 140kW (XPower) to 154kW (Long Range 64kWh), with combined energy efficiency sitting between 16.1kWh/100km (Extended Range 77kWh) to 19.0kWh/100km (XPower).
Standard features from the base model include LED headlights and tail lights, 18-inch alloy wheels with aero covers, leatherette and cloth combination upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, 360-degree parking cameras, 10.25-inch and 12.8-inch HD driver and infotainment displays, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Moving up to the XPower brings leatherette/suede sports seats, a two-tone exterior paint finish, and unique alloy wheels with orange brake calipers.

Expect a similar lineup to be launched in Australia later this year, likely starting around the $40,000 drive-away point to give clearance to the MG 4 EV Urban, which tops out at $34,990 drive-away for the ‘Essence 54’ long-range model.
CarExpert is expecting more information as soon as the Melbourne motor show – which kicks off this Friday, 10 April – so stay tuned for our coverage.
