America is celebrating 250 years in 2026. But, did you know that ‘America’s first motorcycle company’, Indian, is celebrating 125 years of doing the whole motorcycle thing? That means that they have been around for half of America’s existence. That’s a pretty remarkable achievement, and instead of throwing a party hat on an existing motorcycle and calling it a day, Indian has brought something properly special to the table that pays homage to the most iconic name in American motorcycle history — the Indian Chief.

It’s the kind of cruiser that looks like it should be parked outside a 1940s diner next to a black-and-white photo of your grandpa, but then when you saddle up and ride, it reminds you that yes, it’s still 2026.

We rode the newest Indian Chieftain Powerplus and it blew us away.

Classic Chief Design: Like It Rolled Off The Production Line In The 1940s

2026 Indian Chief Vintage Old And New Indian

Indian Motorcycle absolutely understood the assignment here. The newest addition to the Indian Chief lineup is the all-new 2026 Chief Vintage. The name speaks for itself, as this new American cruiser is all about vintage vibes. The Chief Vintage borrows its look straight from the 1940s Chief, and the first thing you notice is the beautiful silhouette. Those deeply valanced fenders front and rear, also known as skirted fenders, do more than just cover the tires. They give the bike that flowing, heavyweight silhouette that screams classic Indian.

The whole shape is pure old-school. It’s got wire-spoke wheels, floating solo seat, wide vintage bars, and an overall stance that looks unapologetically period-correct. The Chief Vintage really looks like it came straight off the assembly line in Springfield in the 1940s. Then there is the engine presentation. The air-cooled Thunderstroke 116 motor is the same unit you will find on the other Chief models, but this one is styled deliberately to look like it belongs in a different era, with black, non-machined cylinder heads (because there were no machines used in the ’40s). The entire bike is blacked out except for the cylinder heads and push rods, which are painted silver and once again echo the finishes used on early Chiefs.

The fit and finish does not look sterile or overly computerized. It looks like someone cared about texture and contrast, like it was meant to be admired up close. In fact, clay modeling was given special attention here during the design process. As you can see on all Indian motorcycles, the craftsmanship is top-notch, and according to me, is one of the best in the world.

The floating seat was given special attention, and Indian Motorcycle’s design director Ola Stenegard has been pretty open about building a bike that honors the visual template that made the 1940s Chief iconic in the first place. The seat is almost identical to the original because, as Ola puts it, “motorcycle design has changed over the years, but the human butt has remained the same”.

In the real world, the Chief Vintage feels extremely close to the rest of the Chief family. The tank and engine are the same, and the bones are familiar. The changes are mostly about the vibe and the ergonomics, plus little tweaks like the rear-end feel and stance that help it land the vintage silhouette you want.

This is truly the most beautiful American V-twin cruiser I have ridden.

Modern Tech: A Vintage Look With Modern Tech

Sitting there in the middle of all that nostalgia, is a 4-inch round touchscreen. It looks like a classic gauge until you actually use it, and then you realize it is running Indian Ride Command with smartphone connectivity and modern interface options. You also get navigation and ride info, plus the usual connected conveniences like calls and messages. If you are the type who wants your bike to look like 1946 but behave like 2026, this is the sweet spot. It is not a giant tablet stapled to the bars. It is a subtle, integrated modern touch that stays out of the way until you need it.

Other modern features include cruise control, keyless ignition, ABS, and rear cylinder deactivation for heat management when you are stuck at lights. So, while you get all the vintage stuff thrown in, the modern world is still at your beck and call.

Let’s be honest, nobody is buying this bike for quarter-mile bragging rights or because they want the adrenaline rush of high speed. The Chief Vintage is about torque, feel, and that big V-twin pulse you can ride all day. This is a big badass American cruiser.

The 2026 Chief Vintage uses the familiar air-cooled Thunderstroke 116, with a claimed 120 lb-ft of torque at 2,900 rpm. That number tells you everything. It’s all the power you will ever need right where you actually ride a cruiser like this, which is low in the rev range, with that effortless shove that makes passing feel casual and rolling starts feel theatrical.

You also get three ride modes, Tour, Standard, and Sport, which essentially let you choose how exciting you want the throttle response to be. Most owners will probably live in Tour or Standard, because that is where the whole luxury-cruiser personality makes the most sense. And, this is a luxury cruiser after all.

Rear cylinder deactivation is one of those features you do not think about until you are sitting in traffic and realize your inner thigh is not being slow-roasted. It’s a small modern touch that makes a big V-twin cruiser easier to live with on a day-to-day basis.

I got to ride the Chief Vintage in the cayons outside Los Angeles, and it was a beautiful route for a cruiser like this. Even though the Chief VIntage weighs over 700 lbs, never once did I feel this weight. The bike handles itself effortlessly on any road and under any condition. The suspension setup is perfect, the engine feels great, and you can lean pretty nicely into a turn before the floorboards meet the tarmac.

On the highway the ride is beautiful, and you can adjust your riding when and how you want.

Ergonomics And Comfort: Floorboards For Days

This is a laid-back cruiser that offers great performance in the best ways. The floorboards are massive, and you can move your feet forward or back depending on how you want to sit or if your legs get twitchy. On long rides, that matters.

On the highway, the Chief Vintage felt composed and comfortable. The floating seat really was something else. I usually complain about seat comfort, but this was wonderful. The seat is genuinely comfortable, and the whole riding position is built around enjoying the ride. This is not a bike you climb on and immediately think, time to attack corners.

The Chief Vintage is not a floppy couch, and it can handle well on curves. The chassis is modern, the tires are proper, and the overall setup feels confident. But pushing it hard misses the entire point of a vintage character. The comfort, engine performance, and ridability of the Chief Vintage are truly standouts for this beautiful cruiser.

V-Twin Cruiser Competitors For Around $20,000

If you are in the market for a modern-classic V-twin cruiser around the $20,000 mark, there are a few names that will end up on your shortlist.

The Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic is the obvious cross-shop, and it starts at $19,999 for 2026. It has the nostalgic touring-cruiser vibe, a big presence, and a deep catalog of accessories. If you want something cheaper but still in the general Harley universe, the 2026 Street Bob starts at $14,999. It is not as vintage-lux, but it is a legit option if your budget wants to stay more Street Bob than Heritage Classic.

However, this is just my own personal view. Harley is excellent at selling you a feeling, while Indian is excellent at selling you a feeling and then quietly reminding you that you are getting a whole lot of bike for the money. The craftsmanship and performance of Indian’s motorcycles have more often than not surpassed Harley-Davidson bikes. With the Chief Vintage in particular, you get the most beautiful package, and an engine that just feels better.

2026 Indian Chief Vinatge: Colors, Pricing, And Customization

For the 2026 Vintage you get two colors. The bike I rode was red and in my opinion is the better color. riding it in the sun really leta the color pop. The black looks great as well, especially with the blacked-out vibe of the bike.

The Chief Vintage starts at $19,999 for the black color, and availability is pegged for March. If you love the red, you are not alone. It is the one that screams heritage and looks like it belongs in a classic poster, but it’s a bit pricier.

Customization is also a big part of the story and Indian is rolling out a healthy accessory lineup, including things like a quick-release windshield, saddlebags, highway bars, and comfort add-ons. You can customize your motorcycle to add in your own personal touch.

The 2026 Indian Chief Vintage is beautiful. Not internet-beautiful, not brochure-beautiful, but in-person, stop-and-stare, walk-around-it-twice beautiful. More importantly, it feels like it has its own identity. It is not trying to be a generic retro cruiser. It is specifically trying to channel one of the most recognizable motorcycles in American history, and it succeeds.

Yes, it is expensive. But you are paying for a luxury cruiser experience, a massive torque-rich V-twin, modern tech like the 4-inch Ride Command touchscreen, ride modes, and rear cylinder deactivation, and a design that looks like nothing else in the market.

And if a Harley owner tells you the Chief Vintage is too pretty to be a real cruiser, just nod politely. They are probably still browsing the accessory catalog to make their bike look like this one from the factory.
