In recent years, several new Asian brands have entered the US. That has resulted in a big jump in the number of small bikes sold at affordable MSRPs. However, these come with a question mark of service networks and overall reliability. So if you want something fun, trustworthy, and cheap to own, Japanese bikemakers still deserve almost all of your attention. Accordingly, you’ll find this list full of bikes from the Land Of The Rising Sun. There are some surprise entries in there, too, and we’ve tried to cater to all the segments. Yes, including cruisers, ADVs, and sports bikes.
Honda Grom
Price: $3,599
On paper, an under-10-horsepower 125cc motorcycle will never sound fun. But ride the Grom, and you’ll know why this sells as it does. ‘Fun’ is its middle name, as it lets you do anything from errand runs in the city to wheelie practices in the parking lot. This is perfect for learning the ropes of biking, too. As for affordable ownership, its parts are really cheap, and the engine is practically unbreakable. Some folks have even plonked turbos on the Grom, without damaging the engine. Go figure.

Royal Enfield Hunter 350
Price: $4,299
This right here is the most fun 350cc Royal Enfield you can take home. It comes down to the overall riding experience, given its more commanding ergonomics, easy-going dynamics, and lower weight compared to other RE 350s. For reference, the Hunter weighs 399 lbs–a sizable 22 lbs less than the Meteor 350. Sweetening the pot are cheap spare parts and impressive reliability. The overall simple construction and an understressed engine deserve credit here.

Honda CB300R
Price: $4,499
The CB300R is as fun as a sub-300cc urban naked bike can be. There are two reasons for that: its peppy engine and its ultra-low curb weight. It also doesn’t cut corners, as you get Showa suspension and ABS. As for affordability, the price for admission has just dropped to under $5,000 for 2026. At the same time, the 286cc engine has proven reliable over the years with just basic maintenance like oil changes. It will technically keep running forever without any surprises (this comes from personal ownership experience of this engine).

Kawasaki Z500
Price: $5,699
We often talk about the Ninja 500 as being a fun little sports bike. But the Z500 should actually promise more fun in most scenarios, barring racetrack shenanigans. That’s because the weight is just 366 pounds (10 down on the Ninja 500) while the 451cc parallel-twin engine still has the same power as the faired bike. The value proposition is better, too, as ABS comes standard here. As for affordability, Kawasaki’s 400-500cc platform has been known to take years of abuse without giving up. So as long as you follow general maintenance, things should be cheap to run.

Honda CRF300L
Price: $5,749
Dual-sports promise a level of fun nothing else can match. They can do serious off-road stuff while being road-legal for commute and occasional freeway duties. All this while, they are lightweight and have less repair costs, thanks to the stripped-back designs. In this space, the CRF300L serves as a great, affordable option. It has the same engine as the CB300R above, so reliability is top-notch. At the same time, the cost of admission, maintenance, and spares is low, too. Proper long-travel suspension, knobby tires, and a 21-inch front wheel sweeten the pot.

Royal Enfield Himayalan
Price: $5,999
For some ADV representation, the Himalayan is our pick. The Indian-made motorcycle has not only proven reliable, but it is also tough enough to take serious bashing in off-road terrain. Add to that its on-road credentials, and you have a fun do-it-all adventure bike for under $6,000. Finding a MY25 example will further save you $200. That can go into modifications to boost its toughness even more.

Kawasaki KLX300SM
Price: $6,049
Supermotos are a recipe for fun. After all, they are made to support all your tomfoolery, be it random wheelies or knee dragging in the canyons. The KLX300SM is one such supermoto for budget buyers. The asking price is just over $6,000, and if you find a 2025 model, you can save a couple of hundred dollars over that as well. Along with the cheap entry price, this engine has been in use for several years, so running costs should be low.

Triumph Thruxton 400
Price: $6,295
The Thruxton 400 is a unique proposition in the entry-level space. It caters to the niche customer base that drools over cafe racers. As a result, you get a sexy design with a quarter fairing, a committed riding posture, and likable modern features. As for reliability, this is built by the same folks who make the KTM 390 range, but the engine is considerably less stressed. You still get 41 ponies and a 388-lb curb weight, which unlocks a potential for reaching impressive speeds.

Honda Rebel 500
Price: $6,799
Here’s something for cruiser fans. The Rebel 500 is the gold standard for 450-500cc cruiser bikes, and that’s been the case for a while. Yes, even after the arrival of the new kids (Kawasaki Eliminator and CFMoto 450CL-C). The engine has an excellent spread of power, while retaining an impeccable reliability record without any serious hiccups. Should anything go wrong–for whatever reason–you can trust Honda’s service network to get a cheap and quick fix. You should also know that ABS is standard for 2026, but you can get the non-ABS model from 2025 for $6,499 (if you can find one).

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-4R
Price: $9,299
Yes, $9,299 is a high price for what is essentially a sub-500cc motorcycle. However, look past that, and you’ll realize the ZX-4R is arguably the most impressive machine in this ballpark. That is down to its 399cc inline-four engine–the only one of its kind in the segment. This is topped with good-quality suspension, brakes, and chassis for enabling proper fun in the twisties. It also sounds like a mini superbike, which only ups the fun. Finally, there have been no major engine woes since its inception. We’d suggest you find a MY25 example, though, as it will save you a couple of hundred dollars.
