An adventure bike is many things to many people. Some want one to traverse countries and continents; others end up riding it to work or the local coffee shop. Whatever the ride, the adventure bike is expected to be good at it. Sadly, that math doesn’t always work. The adventure bikes that are designed for long-distance use don’t always like to be confined to city limits.

And those designed to make your city rides easier on your derrière can run out of breath on the highway. The good thing is, today there is something for everyone, including adventure bikes that are good at a lot of things. Here are ten adventure bikes that deliver versatility, comfort, and control in equal measure.

Kawasaki KLR650 Adventure

Price: $6,999

Kawasaki

The KLR650 has been around for a very long time, and it will probably remain for an even longer time. It has all the bare essentials you’ll require in a motorcycle, including ABS, and nothing extra. The weight has crept up over the years to the point that it is difficult to call the base version a dual-sport bike anymore. The KLR650 Adventure adds touring features like aux lights, luggage, and a 12V and USB charging points, but it remains the hard-as-nails companion you’d want with you on a long ride into the unknown.

For a little more moolah than the KLR, KTM’s 390 Adventure R makes a lot of sense, especially if you plan to go off-road a lot. It has the legs to do highway miles, the torque to take on dirt, and has a full electronics suite with a by-wire throttle and a six-axis IMU. There is also a fully adjustable suspension, a 5-inch TFT display with Bluetooth and navigation, and the cornering ABS and traction control are switchable.

Yamaha Ténéré 700

Price: $10,999

Tenere 700 action 1 Yamaha

The Ténéré 700 was developed to be the best off-road middleweight ADV in the business, and it’s safe to say that it nailed that brief. It has now become more civilized, with a by-wire throttle, ride modes, and an optional two-way quickshifter. Yamaha has also improved its highway manners by fitting a taller windscreen for better wind protection. So it has grown up, yes, but it hasn’t lost the playfulness that we know and love about it.

The Africa Twin is one of those motorcycles that keeps on keeping on, despite an apparent lack of updates. It is still a good choice because of its combination of reliability, features, and price. The automatic makes a lot of sense if you need versatility. Not only does it make riding in the city so much easier, but it also offers manual control and the ‘G Switch’ that allows more clutch slip when you need better control at really slow speeds. If you need even more comfort, the Adventure Sports offers electronic suspension in addition to everything else.

It is equipped with a 21/18 spoke rim combination, more travel for the suspension, and it should be both more reliable and better suited to high-speed off-road riding than the 1290 Super Adventure S’s suspension. Of course, the seat is higher as well, but that’s the price you pay for getting an all-conquering off-road ADV.

Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally

Price: $31,995

Ducati Multistrada V4 Rally Ducati

The Multistrada V4 Rally is the most versatile of the large Multistradas. It gets the spoke rims, electronic suspension, and all the features you’d expect from an exotic European machine. But it dials back on the temperamental behavior, because the new Granturismo V4 is a gem. The electronic suspension can adjust automatically, can be changed at the touch of a button, and lets the Multistrada be taken off the side stand much more easily. There is a battery of electronics at work behind the scenes, of course, and the window into that world is the 6.5-inch TFT screen. Standard equipment includes 12V and USB charging ports, TPMS, and radar at both the front and rear, which gives access to adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and blind spot detection.
